On Footy Confidential last night, Garry Lyon made comment on it being unfair for Anzac day to be held just by Essendon and Collingwood and other teams should get a go. I don't agree with this. As someone else said (I think it was Caro, yes she made and intelligent comment  ) that on years when Anzac day is on the weekend, other teams do play. But when it is a weekday, it should be only Melbourne teams anyway because it is he home of AFL. Based on that, It should really go to the two most popular teams (Essendon and Collingwood.) These two teams make the most revenue for the AFL and so obviously the AFL will want to keep it as a traditional clash. IMO, they are right, not because of the revenue making, just because it is now a traditional match. To change it would be like saying "let's take the grand final to Subi"

I thought it was Carey who made a comment that Essendon and Collingwood shouldn't have a monopoly on that day. Garry Lyon seemed pretty neutral about the issue.

Using Carey's logic.
I can see it now Anzac Day 2010 Collingwood V Gold Coast Kangaroos.

Well, the truth is that the concept was driven from Essendon / Collingwood - not the AFL. So it's only fair that the innovators get to keep the game.

I hate the pies and bombers just as much as the anybody, but i think the ANZAC day match should be only for these two teams. Imagine watching the Kangaroos and Frementle on this big day. I would rather watch Bermuda vs Namibia in cricket.

if they change it and allow other teams then they will never get over the
50,000 going to the game.
very good point.......... yes it should just stay as essendon and collingwood cause 2 games will mean less crowd and won't be as good of atmosphere at the game

Carey has no ****en idea at all......He just wants the Roos in the cash thats all...

I totally agree. Last night on SEN's World Sport Overnight this topic was brought up and someone made mention that it's exactly the same as saying to Bill Gates, 'hey, we think this Microsoft is a good idea, why don't you share the wealth with us?'.

Everyone seems to think that the AFL thought up the idea and thought Essendon and Collingwood will draw the biggest crowd and make us money. The AFL DID NOT hand the these two clubs the idea of playing on ANZAC Day.

Exactly. No reasonable person can tell me that a game between these teams: St.Kilda, Melbourne, Bulldogs, Geelong, Kangaroos, Hawthorn and even Richmond could draw 70,000, let alone 90,000+ people.

I hate the logic that we shouldn't have a monopoly on it. Why not? You don't see Collingwood whinging because they deserve the dream time at the G game since Richmond currently have 2 indigenous players playing while we have 3.

Great point. It was Sheedy and Richmond who came up with that.

Wayne Carey= wicked footy player, total dolt when it comes to making any real meaningful comment on footy. What about this? Why not try a 2nd ANZAC day game at the Dome just to measure the reaction. I have a feeling that the AFL has probably come to the conclusion that it has potential to be an embarassment. I mean do these people understand the concept of tradition? It must have an element of both passion and continuity. Changing the treams every year would rob it of this and for all their faults even the AFL realise this.

Spot on mate. :thumbsu:

The day (from a football point of view) has become what it is as a pure result of the involvement of Essendon & Collingwood. They should keep it theirs at all costs.
