Ayres is a former coach and someone who many claimed was not a great coach I think this proves otherwise.

Mattner thread I never started but do love his tackling and am a fan, shoot me if you want.

The Warnock thread was definately a :o moment first didnt realise how old he was and then looked at his stats please disregard that thread.

Ayres wasn't a great AFL coach, nor will he ever be.

Congratulation on his VFL coaching success for sure, but this hardly makes him a tactical mastermind.

I think the issue is context.

Ayres was an above average AFL coach for a few years, but there was no doubt at all his time had come.

a) He lost the players. Andrew McLeod, a once in a generation player wanted to retire because of Ayres.
b) His continual involvement in recruitment was a prime example of why RMs and List Managers are given a great deal of independence these days.
c) Most importantly, with the list he had, he should have been top 4 every year.

Coaching a VFL side in 2011 is a different kettle of fish. No one doubts his abilities, but he had obvious flaws and his time had come.* Had a few average years in the backrooms for Essendon as well. And a few disappointing years at the Cats. Let's not pretend the Crows got rid of Leigh Matthews in his prime.

*Remind you of anyone?

99% of AFL coaches end up being nothing more than good coaches. Even the last coach we had, was not great. The odds on Brenton Sanderson ending up as a 'great coach' are miniscule.

You are right, Gary Ayres was not a great AFL coach but he was better than OK.

Port Adelaide, Melb, Western Bulldogs, heck even we (never happen) could do far worse than having him as a senior assistant coach. He was a far better coach then many give him credit for.

Just replying to what was posted.

Don't think will changes anyone's opinion as to him being a 'great coach'. He was an OK coach and a horrid list manager with poor ability to relate to a broad group of players.

He makes a good VFL coach because the VFL game plans are simple and easy....not to mention, have you seen Ports list? His whole premise is 'kick the ball', he'll tell you that.

I'd personally much rather assistants who can throw up left of center stuff to challenge Sando. Stuff at the fore front, stuff that will be copied, not is copying.

Maybe we should just give him credit for learning from his mistakes and reinventing himself as a coach. I think you will find he is a far different coach to what he was 8 years ago.

I'm basing most of my Ayres assessment on post Adelaide.

His Borough game plan is quite simple, but effective.

And honestly, best of luck to him and congratulations. He's put in a lot of effort and work at Port over the past years and it's well deserved.

Just don't believe he'd be valuable to our club.

Probably. Change as good as a holiday, you know how it goes. There will likely be an improvement (not as dramatic as 05/06) next year with Sanderson as well, based solely on the freshness a new coach will bring.

Still, this is a fairly mammoth achievement by Ayres, he should be very proud :thumbsu:

Doesn't always work out like that :(

In a round about way :) Wasn't even replying to that though, rather making a statement I wouldn't want him here.

Based on historical events, neither would I but the skill set he has would be valuable to a young, inexperienced coaching team.
