Just watched Gary Pert being interview on the Open Mike series on Fox Footy.

If you haven't watched it but have the ability to do so, do yourself a favour and have a look.

Pert talks about the relationships with Eddie, Malthouse, Buckley and in particular the contract struck up for Bucks to replace Malthouse in 2012. He talks about the Rat Pack for a little bit also.

The part that was really compelling for me was when Pert talked about the two year extension and three year director of coaching deal struck with Malthouse.

Pert stated that there is no doubt we won the premiership in 2010 because there was a sharp focus by Malthouse due to the fact he only had two more years. He went out and got Jolly and Ball to try and win a premiership. It was the single focus for the club, no talk of rebuilding or building, they just wanted a premiership in Mick's final two years.

Hopefully someone will be able to put up a link to the 30 minute program because it is compelling viewing in my opinion.
I wouldn't give malthouse much credit for jolly and ball. They were a stroke of luck, ball wanted to come to a team with finals opportunities, and jolly wanted to come to Melbourne. We needed an inside mid to replace obree, and we needed a ruck to replace Fraser. There wasn't any genius recruiting involved other than a bit of draft manipulating for Luke ball. Malthouse was a shit coach and he got gifted a gun team that won him a final, should have been two if not for his bullshit in 2011.

No arguments from me that's for sure and I certainly didn't mention anything about giving Malthouse credit. Although, that being said he was the senior coach no less and would've played a part in recruiting both of those players. At least in the decision being made to get them at the very least.

All I can say is thank god it happened so that 2010 will always be a sweet sweet memory.

I 100% agree. We where so Focused to make sure that MM left with a Flag and that why we went out a Got Jolly and Ball.

We would normally done that if MM was Finishing up

Gary started with his story about his tenure with Fitzroy (the club he supported as a boy), he injured his knee in his last game for Fitzroy. Fitzroy then told him he would be offered less money for his next contract, before Collingwood (the club he originally despised), encouraged him to come to our club after Alan McAllister's endorsement. He then elaborated about playing on the game's best forwards (Dunstall, Ablett & Lockett), before retiring permanently as a player in 1995 under premature circumstances due to his knee.

He then worked at Austereo & Channel 9, before becoming our club's CEO in 2007. Perty told the tale about Eddie, his lifestyle, persona & avid love for the club. Mick as our coach was under siege leading up to the signing of that 5-year deal with Bucks 5 years ago in 2009. In short, Gary said that Mick wanted to go after that premiership in the next 2 years & achieved it with cunning recruiting of Ball & Jolly, instead of going to the well & continually rebuilding.
Well there you go, Mick was dead in the water and looked after for a further two years and beyond. Mick and Bucks had a meeting and agreed that the plan would go ahead. He never approached Pert for an extension.

It seemed to me Pert got pretty emotional when talking about how Ed had Mick's back for years, only for Mick to turn on on Ed.

Just shows how MM F**ked the Club when he had his Temper Tantrum about leaving

I thought the exact same thing actually. Pretty sad that egos appeared to get in the way of an amicable finish.

The interview concluded with two topics. The first was about Dane Swan, where Gary insists that many make false conclusions on perception about his personality, Swanny would let Perty know about where he was going, who he was with & was deemed fine to do as he wished and wanted, unless he was with bikies as Gary had mentioned. Then there was the 2012 fiasco in August, 2012, where Dane turned up to training under the perceived influence of alcohol detected by the playing group, who had earlier made the pact to not consume alcohol until the end of the season. Subsequently, the players opted to suspend him for two games without the club's knowledge, therefore prompting Swan to admit his blunder.

The final segment of this interview with Mike, was about Gary's thought process on his club's next push for a premiership. He ends by stating he believes the club can prevail in the coming seasons (2015-2017), for as long as we have the best players on the field every week which we haven't been able to embrace in recent seasons and this year with multiple players not being able to play together due to frequent injury issues to various players. So a settled line-up that plays every week will enable our coach Nathan Buckley the best chance to succeed as coach.

If egos could've been kept in check and Mick was in his third and final year as Director of Coaching, I wonder how the club would be faring now? I'm not sure we'd be any better off to be honest.

Our game plan wouldn't be evolving nearly as much and I think the players would feel conflicted somewhat in who to speak to and who is the pack leader.

In 2012 he said the same thing. 2-3 year goal. We are no where near a flag for this year or the next.

It also needs to be said that Pert mentioned that Eddie was the one who raised the idea of the transition agreement when the board was divided about Mick continuing at all and in that sense Eddie was in some sense the architect of Mick's revival. Neale Daniher got no such quarter at Melbourne after a decade and we need to remember Melbourne's 2000 GF appearance was as ancient history as was our 2002/3 GF appearances. People forget that Mick was not exactly being lionised by the industry then as the champion coach as he was post 2010. It could have been the end of Mick.

People laughed when Maxy publicly said in 2009 we were gunning for a flag and it has to be said that we didn't much look like it then either. Fraser said he was sick of the going through the motions bullshit and that players seemed to be satisfied with a good paycheck and the nightlife it afforded.

The deal snapped people out of their complacency and we went for Jolly and Ball which was the difference for us. I expect us to get aggressive in trading as we did with the drafts in the last two years.

He didn't really say we had a 2-3 year goal. He was aksed the question "Can you win a flag in the next 2 years". Absolutely was his reply. Nothing about a 2-3 year plan. He stated that if we can get our best team on the park, which clearly we haven't been able to do, then we can beat anyone.

This is spot on. Look at the history of coaches - what coach in the history of the game, who was deemed to be on his last legs by both insiders and the AFL community as whole, gets a 5 year contract. Most are shown the door and get a press conference at best. MM was given a retirement contract by the club as a thanks for your efforts.

MM took the deal with glee when he was in a poor position and then tried to hold the club to ransom when he was on better grounding.

Pert might think he hasn't had a falling out with Liberace, but when Liberace was on Footy Classified and he had to say Pert's name, he spat it out with sheer hatred.

It doesn't surprise me at all that Malthouse's ego continually drives him to this sort of behaviour. It beggars belief really that he feels so harshly done by! :drunk:

Cool so he's saying we are ready but injuries are the excuse. Ok....

As long as the recruiting of recycled played doesn't mean replace premiership players with washed up hacks then we might go slightly forwards.

Unfortunately, the media (especially TV) is full of knuckle draggers from yesteryear who go by the ol 'injuries are no excuse' mantra. Internally, clubs lament their injury lists and know that it's going to cost them. The coaches and other officials have to pull out the old cliches lest they be slaughtered by said knuckle draggers. Clubs need to stop beating their chests and tell us what they're really thinking, not what the so called tough men want.
Pert said what we all know or what the realistic among us know.
