A month or so ago I noticed Rainsey was starting to spoil exactly like Gaspar did in his prime. Yesterday he had a couple more "Gaspar" like spoils and I was wondering if anyone else has noticed that Andrew has improved this aspect of his game by a large margin.

I must say I am wrapt that Gas is staying on to teach the kids. Our backline will benefit for the next decade by learning from one of the best defensive Full Backs since the mid 90's (shocking when he gets the ball though ;)).

I heard he was moving on from the club?

But yes Raines was very good yesterday in his body work on Tarrant. However, IMO he probably was lucky not to give a couple of frees away, maybe because its his smaller stature that makes it less obvious to the Umpires

polak can learn to spoil and use bodywork from raines

Don't think anyone ever questioned Gaspar as a stopper or spoiler until later in his career, just his skill level was not anywhere near AFL standard. So he could very well be a very good defensive coach.

nice bit of media fluff for the press conference was all that was

id be happy if he has nothing to do with the club

peaheart!

is he teaching him how to kick also, this is the one thing stopping Rainesy becoming a super player.

at least he doesn't have a peabrain and a peadick

Madtiger - Just ignore PSLC.
Have a look at all his/her posts - totally bags everyone for having opinions and offers absolutely nothing constructive in return. I'm sure his burgeoning career in politics is gathering pace as we speak.
.....a waste of time....and space.

Nice thought. Except Gaspar is currently a long way away from the club and has not contacted the club since he "retired".

He would have tought him over the past year. I'm looking forward to when he comes back to the club which should be next month I think, Thursfield is reported to have said Gaspar has been a massive help with his development.

I just hope someone 'influences' him and stops him from doing those long, sweeping, widow-making handballs before someone like Lids gets pulvorized and a busted knee from waiting for one.

Ignorance alert.

YES footballers need to be taught specific skills at AFL clubs WTF do you think they call it TRAINING for peabrain?!!

"he aint even at the club" - what about before he left? They had all pre season working together as a defensive group.

you really have NFI if you think AFL footballers need to be taught fundamentals like spoiling. TRAINING at AFL is for strategy and set plays, where to run to etc, coaches expect new draftees to already know the fundamentals of the game... FFS how hard is it to spoil? 184cm Raines is not going to be getting specialised training from the Gas on how to friggen spoil. Gaspar has had as much influence on Raines' spoiling as common sense has had on you. Turn down the shade of rose in your specs a few notches c.ockhead.

Just what we need - a generation of backmen that can spoil but turn it over when they actually touch it.....

Raines is a poor player and I'm very happy Gaspar retired. I would be happy to trade Raines this year (he's crap). I was merely offering a possible (and reasonable) explaination for one side of Andrew's game that I believe has improved quite noticeably.

If you haven't noticed it then just say so, otherwise don't talk to me like that man, just be cool. I don't come here to have arguments I come here to talk footy.

all good benny, just dont call me peabrain next time :p

If Rainesy can add that particular role to his rep he'll be a better player for it and more valuable to the side. I wouldnt expect it to happen much because of his lack of heaight but if we could develop an extra option to put on leading forwards all the better :thumbsu: Ive noticed that this year he's been given more of those roles than a straight up attacking HBF.
