Don't know all the details, but I heard on the news this afternoon that Travis Gaspar has been placed on the long term injured list.

This sucks, but it will give a rookie listed player a chance to step on to the main list, and will give someone like Hansen a chance to show what he is made of at Senior level.

beh....foot injury I think...Woosh said that round 1 wasn't the aim and they "haven't really set any dates". Yep, that sounds like Travis Gaspar alright...

It's not really a suprise, lets face it, it's only a suprise if he's fit these days.

Cut our loses and delist ?

This guy might just simply not have the body to play top level football.

Shame though, he has talent.

Oh well, maybe it isn't as serious as all that, and he'll be fully fit and back a few rounds into the season and- no. screw that, we're talking about Travis Gaspar. Maybe he'll stay injured until round 10, then play one good game, then get injured again, then miss the following six weeks, play another 3 minutes in round 17 before breaking down completely for the rest of the year. At which point he will have surgery, and an extended rest, and just get back into training during preseason 2005, until...

Bloody hell.
Its not his fault, but its hard not to feel very very frustrated with what we've got out of our investment with him. The club has shown an enormous amount of faith in him, (perhaps foolishly so, to the point of not recruiting and developing as many other viable options as they should have), and frankly, they've got zilch in return.
At this stage, I'm going to continue to stupidly hope for the best, that he'll be righta few weeks into the season, at which point he'll kick the injury bugs for good, but yeah, the clock is certainly ticking.

If he has another season where he fails to string a few games together, hard questions are going to have to be asked the following year about his value to the list. Undeniable talent, but if he's getting on to his mid 20s and has still never managed to play a season of footy, then you have to ask whether he ever will.

They also stated on the news that Gaspar was the man to solve their CHF problems...:(

I'd say to keep him again for this year, see how he does, and if he really cant cut it with the injuries, even though he's immensley talented, it might be better to invest their time in another youngster for his job. I hope it doesn't come to that, but if he can't manage to string games together, it doesnt help the club :(

Everything I was gonna say. Extremely frustrating.

All I can say is.....****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel really sorry for Gaspar, really I do. BUT....Im going to be seriously ****ed off this season when ever it becomes apparent that we NEED some decent talls to stand up and we have NONE because we've put most of our eggs in Gaspars basket and Gaspar has fallen over and smashed those eggs!
What on earth does the club do? Cut our losses and delist Gaspar? Do we keep him on the list but start developing other talls? Or do we go down the same path putting ALL our support into Gaspar and getting 0% return.
If you think of football as a business and Gaspar as an investment really the club would be broke by now because we have got absolutely nothing in return for our investment. It is very frustrating, imagine how it must be for Travis (even worse imo)!

Get well soon Travis, hopefully you'll beable to realise the true potential that you really do have!

Not really news. There was an article on the official website a few weeks back that suggested otherwise but he was always going to struggle to come up for the season opener. Gaspar will be given every chance to save his career.

Wasn't it already well established that Gaspar was on a restricted training program and wouldn't be ready for round 1?

Ch.7 made it sound as though this was a new injury. But I don't think that is the case at all.

I don't think there's a need for all the dramatics. He's still young and he can play at the highest level - so there's no reason why the club shouldn't afford him plenty of time and patience.

Yep, it was said before Christmas and nobody expected him to be up for the first few rounds, and even then it would be WAFL because without a preseason he would be way behind the neccessary fitness level. Maybe he's had to have the fracture reset which would put hi back another 8 weeks,. In reality that's the season gone because starting training in week 8 will only get him fit for around r16.

Just thought i'd let you guys know of this press release Gary Stocks just sent out to the media. It was entitled "Gaspar on Track".

He said:

"Television reports aired last night claiming that West Coast Eagles key position player Travis Gaspar has been placed on the long-term injury list are unfounded and untrue.
Contrary to those reports, Gaspar is tracking nicely. Given his recent history of foot injuries the club's medical and fitness staff have closely plotted and monitored his pre-season training program and he is on course to play early in the new season"

That's More like it.

I only heard it on 7's 6pm preview on 6PR at 5.15 last night anyway.

...breathes again....Anyone up for a class action lawsuit against Ch 7 for causing nervous shock?? I'm pretty sure this has left me with recognisable psychological trauma- believe it or not, I actually had a nightmare which featured Travis Gaspar last night, no doubt thanks to this thread.

I don't think I'll really relax totally until we've seen him out on the field for a few games running.

couldn't be bothered to read through the entire thread - to much t o drink tonight.

but on Gaspar - he is talented. Immesnely talented. but if he hasn't finally delivered on it (just cause its through injury doesn't matter), than he could be in a lot of trouble at the end of 2004.

Geeze Channel 7 - I thought you were with us, not against us! Some dodgy reporting there - more than likely a rookie reporter trying to get an exclusive over the rival football stations.

So do we have an injury list on those who WON'T play against Collingwood in the Pre-Season Cup?

Sadly, I'm more inclined to believe that Gaspar will be unfit for most of the season.

Track record ain't great.

Heard on 6PR radio tonight Barra said WCE have finally admitted that Gaspars foot injury has not responded to treatment as expected. Went on to say that he will NOT be ready for early part of season proper.
I think best case scenario would be round 8 - 10 by the time he comes back via WAFL and no pre season can just about write him off for the season again.

You're all very worried about Gaspar being "damaged goods", but what is his games played versus games missed record as compared with another player who has had injury problems, McDougall.

Gaspar has shown that he can play at the senior level, maybe Keene revisited.

If that is really the case, then I'd suggest that Gaspar's long term AFL career path (at least with the Eagles) is looking decidedly shaky.

Regardless of how good he might be, teams just cannot afford to carry fragile players indefinately in the hope that they will one day make it on the park.

Gaspar IMO has more in common with Lee Walker than Keene. Keene at least used to play occasionally - and was bloody good when he did.

Not really doubting Gaspar's ability, just his durability. Unfortunately some players are like that - the body simply isn't up to the game.

Doesn't sound too good. Is Glass fit? Who will match up on Bandy , Rawlings , Darcy/Street , Grant and Harris in Round 1?

If we take out Glass and Hansen (shoulders) then we would have

Staker on Rawlings
Jakovich on Grant
Gardiner and Cox on Street and Darcy
Harris isn't that scary so we could play Carroll on him.
Johnson, Lynch or Hunter on Bandy.

Still have McDougall.

We have the cattle to cover the Dogs.
