The Australian reports that Gaspar has agreed to a put cut for the remainder of his contract.

Supposedly, he was to earn $1.3m over 2005 and 2006.

If true (and assuming the paycut isnt just a token $50,000 or something like that), this is the first sign that Gaspar has shown that he is interested in the welfare and rebuilding of the football club.

Well done Gas! Now over to you Wayne

Gaspar accepts Tigers pay cut

September 14, 2004

RICHMOND defender Darren Gaspar will take a significant pay cut to remain at Punt Road for the final two years of his contract.

The Tigers had fielded several inquiries for the services of the out-of-form full-back, but his staggering price tag put many rival clubs off making Richmond a serious offer, even on a cost-sharing basis.

Gaspar has served three years of a back-ended five-year contract and had the capacity to earn a total of $1.3 million in 2005 and 2006.

The 28-year-old was secured long-term by Richmond after the West Australian was tempted by a multi-million-dollar offer to join Fremantle after winning the Tigers' best-and-fairest award in 2001 and gaining All-Australian selection in 2000 and 2001.

West Coast and the Kangaroos showed initial interest, but that has since been tempered by financial restrictions.

Gaspar had his worst season this year and was dropped to the VFL for a period in the second half of the season before playing the final five games.

His form tapered off after resuming from a mid-year knee reconstruction last year.

Gaspar and his management are understood to have agreed to a pay cut after meeting last week with Richmond football director Greg Miller.

Melbourne midfielder Scott Thompson appears certain to return home to South Australia to continue his career with either Port Adelaide or the Crows.

The off-contract 21-year-old was having his most successful season this year before fracturing his foot in round 13 and missing the second half of the year.

The Crows will attempt to get involved in a multi-club trade to secure Thompson, using Tyson Stenglein's proposed exchange to West Coast as the second part of the deal.

The Eagles would then have to satisfy Melbourne.

But the Power would be keen to swoop on Thompson as a ready-made replacement should Josh Carr return to Perth to play with Fremantle. The Dockers could offer the Demons their first-round national draft selection and promising youngster Ryley Dunn, who spent most of his first season at Fremantle on the sidelines because of injuries.

To fit Carr within its total player payment allocation, Fremantle may be forced to trade ruckman/key-forward Troy Simmonds for salary-cap relief. Sydney has already indicated it would be interested in Simmonds.

"Had the capacity" is the key phrase in that.

There would be guarenteed money (base money) and then match payments, bonuses for All-Oz selection, finishes in the best and fairest, a bonus for playing more than 20 games etc.

Mimimum match payment is $2k. Gas is probably on closer to $5-6k per match. If he plays 10 games a year it would probably cost him at least $50k per year (more because he couldn't place in the B+F).

So a bit of a paycut, a bit more gaurenteed money instead of incentives, and the overall price can come down a fair bit without hurting him too much.

Also worth remembering that he can go on the veterans list in 2006 so the final year of his deal will be waited to that.

I'm hoping this takes some of the pressure off him and he can concentrate on getting healthy and having a good preseason. He's got plenty of years left, he just needs to get some form back.

dont think he can go on the veterans list, i think you have to be a one club player. But if it is true seeing as it is from a dubious source (the australian) then it is great news.

Nonsense.

10 years at one club and be 30 in the relevant year. He has completed 9 years so far. So in 2006 when he turns 30 he will elligable to be on the veterans list for the 2006 season (the last year of his deal).

I agree that he is a "wisdom weaver" - he certainly weaves more wisdom than most on this site.

Guilt got the better of him ... that lifts him a few notches in my book . Lets hope he can have a big pre-season and get some of that AA form back , that could be a real bonus .

While he is taking pay-cuts, tell him to get a hair cut as well.

right now yes he isnt, but wen hes back to the only defender who can run with reiwoldt you'll all be fawning over him. Hes a class tall defender and has served this club fantastically over the years, he deserves a bit more respect than some fo the ********! hes copped this season from a fair few ppl. He will be fine again next season and I hope he gets financially rewarded for his quality service to this club before his career finishes
