Yeah, not a bad idea. Maybe play for a shield instead. He was an absolute gun for both sides and its sad how his injuries got the better of him in the end. He deserved a better ending to his career.
My only concern with these cup challenges between clubs is it seems to have gone a bit overboard and if clubs keep going, there will be cups everywhere and medals handed out all over the place between clubs. I'd prefer clubs play for a shield.
The only cup that should be played for is the premiership in September.

yeah totally agree, barely a game goes by that doesn’t have a piece if silverware attached to it. That’s why I liked the idea of an individual medal rather than cup or trophy, could be awarded after the game, humble and discreet just like Gav.

errr ... who?:o

Brother of Mark Fraser.

Played reserves at Essendon and then went across to Port in their first season.

From memory he did his knee in a pre-season game and was never seen again.

Darren Fraser would feel pretty ripped off.

He is not the only one feeling ripped off....

Che Cockatoo-Collins, Adam Kingsley, Damien Hardwick, Scott Cummings...

Hell even a few of Port's coaches and trainers have come from Essendon.

It all seems to be one way traffic though, off the top of my head I can't think of one player we have taken from Port...

none of whom have had anywhere near the impact on either club that Gav did.

A medal? Shouldn't it just be a plane ticket and a large bag of cash?
I sense a little bit of bitterness, c’mon he won a brownlow and a premiership with you guys...

Yeah, another bloody medal.
normally I agree with this sentiment, I think many of them are contrived, self advertising, worthless pieces of tin, but if handled correctly I think a Wanganeen medal subtly awarded in the rooms after the game wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Hardwick was a gun at Essendon. Was the heart and soul of 2000 and held the team together 97-98 before the others took his lead and played every ball as hard as he did. An out and out under-rated champion. Loved Gav but Dimma for me. Circumstances with contracts and salary cap, cost us his services and (apart from Jim) our no nonscence attack at the ball.
Couldnt give a fat rats cla#@er what they done at other clubs.

Thats a ridiculous idea! There's other players who served at Essendon that are much more deserving. Sure, he played well with us, but jumped off at the first opportunity. Players in recent years such as Madden, Daniher, Watson to more recently Long, Misiti and eventually Hird, Fletcher, Lloyd.

Have another read crave, it would be a shared award for best afield when Port play Essendon, not just a Bomber award. There are other clubs in the AFL you know ;)

Figured since he contributed to both clubs and was the first aboriginal player to get to 300 it might have been appropriate.

Obviously most essendon fans disagree, fair enough, or maybe you are all just pooey for some reas ... ohhh yeah that’s right:o

believe me when I say Cankles was one of my favourite players, I will always remember when he stirred up one of the Scott brothers in the 04 gf and got us a cheap free kick straight after half time.

Having said that he did a lot more for essendon than he did for Port, whereas gav was reasonably even in that regard.

I did understand it, so would it be an award for a best afield against the two sides or best 'aboriginal' player between the two sides.

May as well have a Hardwick award for best defensive white player also between Ess/Port.

And...the Cummings award for best short term flash of brilliance for a forward between the two sides....oh n one more...best half forward flanker gets the Cockatoo-Collins award.

You say you understand it, but your posts are contradictory. Firstly you said it was stupid idea because there were better/more important players than Wangas at Essendon, completely ignoring the fact that it was meant to be a shared award i.e. named after someone who contributed to BOTH clubs.

Secondly, the aboriginal reference was meant to be more of a justification for an award, not a selection criteria.

If you don’t like the idea, that’s fine, just say so. :thumbsu:

Ok, clearly saracasm goes right over your head, sunshine! ALthough, again, Ill reiterate that Im not fond of the idea...he stated that he was ALWAYS a Port man so it could be an award for the best afield judged Port player when the 2 sides meet. We could have our own award for that particular match named after one of our favourite sons n there are plenty to choose from, some much more decorated than others.
