Continue to play possesion driven, hand ball, run down the middle football.

When will they learn ?

Last night against the Hawks, they continued to handball to players who were closely checked and handball again until they got an outlet. Then they ran through the corridor and spotted up forwards or midfielders who were also streaming into the 50.

Idiots, when will they realise that is outdated footy

They will never win anything playing that type of footy.

Yes, I agree. Been saying that since 2006 actually. All that high possession shit, more than 10 of their players getting more than 30 posessions each and every game. They'll never win more than 8 consecutive premierships playing like that.

I have a problem with their almost total reliance on only 18 different players. God forbid if those 18 players all got injured at the same time, they'd be screwed. And they are just so predictable when they go forward - you just know that they are going to kick it to someone who is down there (when will opposition teams ever wake up to that?). Laidley was on the right track, don't ever bother tackling them, just surround a Geelong player when he has the ball, wave your arms above your head and scream "kick it to me!" or "you've had the ball all day, give me a kick or I'll tell Mum".

Overrated.

if any team developed geelong's pace (collingwood), they can beat them. once the novelty of high possession, high-risk starts wearing off teams will start beating them.

it just requires players to be super fit and very intelligent. the thing that allows geelong to play this high risk footie is their defensive talent like scarlett, harry taylor and milburn. if sydney had a bit more young blood with tackling skills we are good at, we'll be all over them. geelong got the break, when other teams are bit on the old side, except for the hawks.

i for one would love to see geelong play at the scg and see how the dominant geelong will cope

i honestly think you would beat them hopefully it would be a repeat of 05 :D:D

any idea of why the rd 21 game isnt at the scg?

I don't know how a team could be so fit? Collingwood flogged them and beat them with pace and hardness.

But it cost Collingwood as for 2 weeks after that game they looked tired and sore. So i don't know how Geelong are so fit in playing the way they do?

Absolutely, but I guess it is hard for other teams who dont have Grundy.

Round 20 game, Round 21 is against Collingwood as far as I can remember.

Well you're not winning anything playing your type of football. Based on tonight's performance, I'd take a look at your own backyard before offering us advice.

Geelong aren't that fast Mushie. What is fast about Geelong is the ball movement, not the leg speed. We do have a few quick players but our midfield in particular is 'one paced' (I think that means slow LOL). If Geelong continue to rack up victories the 'novelty' will never wear off. What will happen inevitably is that our squad will age and other sides will come up with a new tactic that renders our gameplan obsolute.

For those of you who have just tuned in, the original post was a tounge in cheek pot-shot at other Sydney posters who have been critical of the swans game plan. Dudley was subtely pointing out that the cats use a very similar game plan and use it to great effect.

The big difference is, and I'm fairly sure Dudley will agree, is that the cats play on constantly. The emphasis is on getting it forward as quickly as possible. Then kick it to the advantage of a forward even if he is well marked. Their forwards are good enough to win most of these contests and get a shot on goal.

When the swans do this they look good. Against Carlton for instance.

But far too often the ball will end up in the hands of Ted Richards or LRT or someone else who will back pedal furiously after taking a mark and the moment will be lost. I dont know if its coaches instructions or the player's lack of confidence or what, but I'm sure thats the problem.

Whilst you're right that your midfield is 'one paced', a number of them are very quick in the first 5 or so metres.

It is interesting to note that their key forwards (outside of Mooney) are pretty young and inexperienced. I don't think it is necessarily that they have a lot of talent, but that they create a contest.

This is exactly why Roos has Playfair in the team.

He does not always take the mark, and have a shot on goal, but brings the ball to ground for the players at ground level to do their thing.
