Thought I'd start a thread specifically to chronicle the multitude of media gaffes and errors that seem to crop up daily.

One of my favourite fact manglers is Jon Anderson of the Jim Gerald-Currant Bun, and he was at it again this morning with this tidbit on Stefan Carey (cousin of Big Brother's Ben, apparently):

The nude nut in question was Stefan Carey, who played 45 games with Sydney between 1996-99.

Many would forget that Carey's debut season was so good he finished second to Port Adelaide's Michael Wilson in the Norwich Rising Star Award.

First mistake: JA has overlooked Stef-arn's stellar 3 game stint with Brisbane in 2000.

Second mistake: If Stefan's debut season was 1996 (it was), how could he have been runner-up to a Port player in the NRS when they weren't even in the AFL at that stage? Of course, Jonny meant to say 'Carey's SECOND season, 1997...'

Pedants and media watchers, feel free to add to the list.

Sandy Roberts, when calling Swans games, continually mistakes Daniel MacPherson for Matthew Nicks - and vice versa.

I've counted about 6 times he's done it now, sure they look vaguely similar and their jumpers are 13 and 23 but really - how much is this guy paid to fu(k it up so regulalry ?

cheers

There was a period a few weeks back where Jordan Doering was confused with Adrian Hickmottt and also Kouta (by Bruce).

But then Hickmott's hair grew a bit and he went back to being confused with Whitnall every time he got the ball (again by Bruce....and Tony Macguinness!)

Blight no longer St Kilda coach report
By Aap

Thursday, July 19, 2001

THE St Kilda AFL club has parted company with coach Malcolm Blight, according to a television report today.

'There are conflicting reports over whether Malcolm has quit or indeed been sacked, which several sources have suggested this morning,' Channel Seven reported.

'All the Saints are saying is there'll be a 1pm press conference in Melbourne to announce that Malcolm Blight will part from the Saints and will depart immediately.'

The report suggested that club football director Rob Thomas would take over as interim coach.

The Saints have performed poorly this season with three wins from 15 rounds.

There have also been reports of friction, with Blight said to have missed two important club meetings this week.

Blight also publicly criticised the club last week for its poor 'culture'.

Rob Thomas, eh? Might be a bit busy with Matchbox 20's touring and recording commitments, but if the Saints reckon he can fill in for Blighty...

Mickey Rucci in teh Advertiser gets his facts wrong all the time

Latest was that M Doughty hasn't played an AFL game when had in fact played 2 already

he is jsut very sloppy as are all the tabloids.

My favourite was when the paper had Stuart Wigney playing State Cricket for SA when in fact it was his brother Brad.

Interesting to hear Rex Hunt state on weekend radio that Peter Everitt is a 'false pretender.' Um - This would imply that Spider is merely masquerading as a pretender. Or - to put it another way - he is pretending to be a pretender - ergo, he's not a pretender. Grow up Spider and become a real pretender, why donya??!!!

About Stu Wigney I dont want to be pedantic but I'm pretty sure that Brad is his cousin

Alright then I'll admit it-I love being pedantic, its great.:)

Another courtesy of Jon Anderson, this time on his 3AW breakfast spot...

Question went something along the lines of: "Name the two current AFL coaches who played for clubs that are no longer in the competetion under the same identity?"

"Correct" answers were - Denis Pagan (South Melbourne); and Grant Thomas (Fitzroy). Funny how he didn't think of Mark Williams (Brisbane Bears) though.

It's because the football world forgets that Brisbane were the Bears before the merger. They just remember Fitzroy losing it's identity, it's location, their players, and many other things.

I know I don't think Brisbane lost much, considering they didn't really have a history. But you are correct Mr. Ripper, and Jon Anderson's lack of real journalism shows through a lot in his pieces.

The Hitman

Basil Zempilas (sp)? on his crap footy show.
Peter Sumich is the only left footer to kick over 500 goals in the VFL/AFL history, sorry Simon Madden.
When I corrected Basil he promised he would admit his mistake on the show the next week, over a year has passed & guess what, still hasn't.
We can't let people think Basil knows heck all about footy outside this state can we.

Melissa Ryan in the Age today (27/7). In her "Who will win and why" section of the Hawks/Blues preview she states Hawthorn has only won one of it's last four games.

Here I was thinking we'd won two of the last three.

Well, if we're being pedantic (all good fun IMHO) it should be "one of its last four games", Elt. So her grammar's wrong as well.

Actually you can put that gaffe down to me :D She got the grammar right.

At last years International rules game one of the commentators Drew Morphett kept getting Brad Johnson and Rohan Smith mixed up and Scott West and Nathan Brown mixed up...it was so funny but at the same time annoying.

Earlier on in the year at realfooty.com they called Lindsay Gilbee, Ashley Gilbee. And in the footy record on the WB page they called Mitchell Hahn, Michael Hahn

And what about that one most of yous should have already heard about..that person on Sports Tonight said that Buckley resigned when he was supposed to say re-signed lol he stuffs up all the time though.
