Although it was only Fremantle;

I have to admit it's getting better, a little better, all the time

We have out first win of the year on the board and our youngsters are showing their potential. We will undoubtedly lose many more games, but the future is bright.

By the way, the fab four, based on today's performance, are; Pears, Daniher, Zaharakis and Quinn

:D

I'm liking the defence. It will be a unit in 3 years time.

Also we were able to move the ball into our forward line effectively. Great signs for the future.

It's definitely getting better.

Totally agree. Our ball movement today was alot better then last weeks game against Port Adelaide. Rohan Smith (I think it was, correct me if I'm wrong) mentioned before the game that we basically haven't had our best 22 on the park under Matthew Knights, showing us that he isn't one of many muppets in the media. I cannot wait until we have a fit Gumbleton, Prismall, Reimers, McVeigh, Welsh, Laycock. Hopefully when they all come back into the seniors it will really put pressure on those not performing and make our team alot more competitive. As mentioned, our younger players again stepped up when they needed to so there was alot of positives out of todays game, even if it was against Fremantle.

Quinn was terrible and has no place in the best 22, or 25 for that matter.

But Daniher, Zaharakis, Pears and Myers were all good.

Spikey will be crushed. :D

Loved the point about the backline - ran the ball out beautifully - Pears & Daniher - best games so far! :thumbsu:

He may not be in our best 22, but explain how he was terrible?

Grab a copy of the game and look for yourself.

It's nothing against him, he was picked and he had a go. But he is out of his depth.

Most of the time when he took the game on, he turned it over.
Misjudged flight of the ball to start 2nd quarter a ball which Peake marked and goaled. He also gave Solly a nice handpass and free goal too.

But again, he's young, he's raw and he had a crack....he just wasn't very good.

Couple of his mistake cost us 2 goals.

Not only that, his a terrible body-on-body player and can't really kick (but if Watson improved, so can he).

Oh and his also like jay Nash when it comes to accountability.

But on the upside, all this will improve with experience and I cant wait to see how good this player will became in the future. Looks like another good recruit from the dons.

you have to look at his game in context. he did more than what was expected from him seeing as it was 5th ever game playing the sport.
of course he's not in our best 22.

Sure the kids look good and I felt we were better at the clearance but I'm not Impressed with the hand-balling to guys standing still or the going across the ground.

Sure we are still five or six players down and a few who lack confidence and I'm going to be very blunt sure McPhee kicked three but the guy seems to drop far too many marks that a guy of his ability should take.

Was it just my area of the ground but when the siren went there was no big roar or big reaction from the fans, it was like "o well we won"

Quinn can't be judged in the usual way.

He wasn't picked today to be the usual kind of AFL footballer. That might be the long term goal, and playing today didn't hurt the achievement of that goal, but the main 'idea' behind picking him today had to be different. Because it was only his 5th time playing the code! He wasn't in the side for his skills, or to shut down a player, or even for his goal stopping ability. It was all about his explosiveness off the HB line, his x-factor (comprised of enthusiasm, athletic ability and Gaelic intuitions) and to spark the rest of the team. He delivered on all of that, to a very, very impressive degree.

I liked Ryder up front. Obviously were going to have too many talls once Neagle and Gumbleton come in to the side, but I really hope that Ryder is used through the midfield rotation. He is a great kick of the ball and is very creative. I think his creativity is being stifled in defense, move him up the gound and he will be a star.

i think from memory there was a few clangers in the last minute, so i think everyone was feeling relief more than joy! Agreed on McPhee. He dropped a few piss easy grabs today at critical moments. Definitely prefer him up forward though, it's better he scores 2 goals each week as opposed to costing us 3 like he did most weeks last year.

Very well thought out post BBC :thumbsu:

well dont we all judge a game so differently

yes he stuffed it a few times but there was much to like about his game, not least of all his willingness to take the pill & go

'terrible' is a terrible word to describe his performance today, heres hoping he gets a run next week

well i was suprised the game was finished already, the quarter only went for 24 minutes. my first reaction was "that's it?"
hopefully that's why we didnt seem too enthusiastic
but it was a very exciting match, freo kept slowing us down and there were only 2 goals in the last quarter.

I still haven't seen the game, but I find it hard to believe that Quinn was considered one of our best 22, and that he was picked ahead of Jetta, even if he did play off HB.
that's just people over reacting, but he was impressive.

Ive heard both Lloyd and Knights after the game say he got the nod because he wanted it more. Knights said he is a fantastic listener. Knights mentioned at slection they asked themselves would they pick him if he wasnt Irish, their opinion was he was next in line on VFL form.

So would you pick him again? Personally i wouldnt, a lot of things get overlooked when teams win but if Slattery had of played a game like that he be getting torched on here by now.

I'm not sure about picking him again. You're right: if Slattery had've played Quinn's game, he'd cop it. (But you'd have to note Slattery's impressive new run, engine, enthusiasm, x-factor, the way he brought out things in his teammates....) Quinn's game was Quinn's game, Slattery's was Slattery's.

There was a spot in the side for Quinn's game this week, not so sure about next week. It seems McVeigh will be back, at any rate, and that might be the deciding factor. (Everyone in defence stood up today.) Quinn's current game is something rare and won't last -- he'll gradually 'conform more'. Putting that game on the field is a risk (Sheedy-esque, it must be said). It paid off today, against Freo. Those sort of risks are taken by teams that go places. Terry Wallace would've said "One more week in the VFL." (Compare the 'risk' of taking Skipworth over Cousins. I'm already starting to think of Knights as a coach first and legendary Richmond player second.)

So I don't know if Quinn should be picked next week. It's quite an unprecedented situation, at least for our club, but one thing's for sure: so far, so good. And then some.

Obviously still pissed of becasue you missed out on a hat.:p

I have plenty of worse debuts from players who have played the game since they where 10.
Yes he made a few mistakes but his run from the back half also set up 4 or 5 scoring oppertunities. To say most of the time when he took the game on he turned it over is crap. He had 4 clangers in 20 possessions.

Bit harsh on a bloke playing his 5th game of footy.

The mark peak took was a bloody good catch and was more a function of Qunn's lack of size and ability to muscle in on the contest.

You also neglected to mention his:

Evasiveness - excellent in close
Willingness to take the game on.
Pace
Seemingly excellent football brain for a bloke with 5 games under his belt.

Was arguably better than - Dyson, Lucas, Lloyd, Myers, Stanton, Dempsy, Skipworth all of which have a world of experience over him.

A heap of things he needs to get better at but would have thought that's a positive.
