I wonder if the fact that Austin is one of Gibbs best mates influenced Wayne Hughes and the club in picking him up, especially considering that his other best mate Sellar went to Adelaide and could have influenced Bryce in going home to play with him.
But now it will be Gibbs and Austin influencing Sellar to come to Carlton in a couple of years time when we are on the rise and Adelaide on there way down. A brilliant selection by the club if you ask me, and i am rapt with it.

Here's a quote from Bryce earlier in the year:

"I'm real good mates with James Sellar and Mark Austin. We're at school together as well and in the same group of friends, so I'm with them all day, every day at school and we eat and live out of each other's pockets," Gibbs said.

"So growing up through school and playing footy together at Glenelg as well, we made a real special bond and it's just amazing that we're all going through it together and if one's down, we can pick one of them up and we get behind each other and it's been great.

"(I like) just hanging with the boys, going to have a bit of a hit of golf or go surfing or just sit around and watch a movie - but just sitting around with the boys just gets me away from it all and I have a bit of a laugh and giggle, so it's good."

Come on down James Sellar:thumbsu:

I was also rapt with Benjamin at 51, very Adam Goodes like in build and the way he moves and plays, a steal at 51 IMO.

A little bit similar to what happened with Russel and Hartlett. In my opinion is a great strategy by Hughes again. Hartlett may have had a word to Russell about not going back home etc. Helps for training and home-sickness. Either way Austin is one of the better defenders in the draft and is just what we need.

Gibbs and Austin would be exstatic that they are at the same club, will make a huge difference to there development and in settling in, an inspired pick from Wayne Hughes.:thumbsu:

I'd hate to think the fact they were mates had too big an influence on the decision, but from all reports Austin is a very talented kid and AFAIC it's just a (big) bonus that they're best mates.

FWIW, I thought that we needed another defender from this draft. Was looking at Frawley, but he went pretty early IMO.

Funnily enough, when Gilly1972 and I were doing our Mock Drafts, we both had Austin at 35.
