Just throwing this out there, but if Gibson goes to the PSD then do we go for him. I can appreciate that he won't want to play for the wooden-spooners but tough t***ies I say.

Thoughts?

I think the story will be the same , no matter who the player is. For the PSD we will take the best possible layer that fits the needs/criteria the club has in place.

What could he possibly offer us though?

Good question.

At 189cm he is hardly a KP player. However has been very good at shut down jobs on the big forwards, particulary Buddy. That said Chip Riv, and Garland have that well covered. Can he play forward?

I think we would pass. Unless it was PSD and its a case of who ever is there.

That's just the sort of player we need. Somebody held against their will.

No way would I want him- even if he was for free on a rookie contract!

If he lands that supposed 800k 3 yr deal he will be a contender for the most overrated overpaid player of all time.

He's alright- but we have multiple backmen that are far superior. See Rivers, Frawley, Warnock, Garland etc

Hes a solid player and i am a fan of his but honestly, he would be up there with the last person on an AFL list that i would want at melbourne.

With Shaun Burgoyne, he si the explosive mid we could use and with Lake at least he is an elite KPD (despite our abundance of KPD's) but Gibson is the exact player we really do not need and would not benefit us in any way.

I'd happily sign him up for 3 years, but 850k or whatever he wants might fly in the face of some of our better performed players. He's what 24 - perfect age to be joining us.

FB: Gibson Warnock Bennell
HB: Grimes Frawley Rivers

He'd free up Garland to the forward line and take the role of the shut down defender on your small/mid sized dangerous marking types - SJ, LeCras, Porps, Medhurst etc. If we send Garland to the forward line we don't have the player ideally suited to this position. Frawley can do it well but we want him to mature into a full back, putting pressure on Warnock to keep improving. Rivers seems better suited to playing third tall like Maxwell does for the pies. Cheney and Bell are the two suited for this role but they both look average.

Bit harsh there mate..

I think a common misconception about Gibson is that he is handy, while he does shut down a lesser player. He got Kudos for keeping Franklin to 5 goals, basically as pity kudos due to him being undersized.

The last thing we need is another undersized key defender.

Pass.

If he comes then we'll be stuck with a group of tallish defenders and no run. We need spots for Cheney, Bennell, Strauss and Grimes.

anyone recall the vfl 2004 granny when sylvia connected with a wild haymaker on gibson?

Exactly big no from me. He is the only type of player we have a surplus of. Reasonable player but not for us.

He can't even get regular time in defence at the Kangaroos, which isn't exactly known for a superb defence. He's had to run through the midfield where he doesn't even know which way is forward ;)

He was pretty good all year in defence, when he was moved onto guys more appropriate to his size he dominated in defence. He was just moved up the ground to give more opportunity to some of the younger guys.

Nice insight there Zvim - cheers for that :thumbsu:

Can't see us chasing after him though - as others have said, there'd be no room for him in our side.

Actually, statistically our defence was excellent this season (I think 6th for least points conceded, phenomenal when you consider how many inside 50s we were giving up). Thompson and McMahon will figure prominently in our best and fairest, Gibson had an excellent middle part of the season and Grima was superb. Our midfield and forward line were the big problems.

However I can't see how Gibson would fit your list, both in terms of balance and development.

Yes a lot of people say the north defence isnt great but i regard it as similar to ours in terms of talent. Grima and thompson in a few years will be super players with Grima to be all australian with the potential he has shown is amazing and similar of garland for us last year. Thompson is similar to our Warnock in that he can do a job on the monsters and rarely get destroyed.
