Feeling hysterical: these good vibrations hit the spot
THE device is roughly 20 centimetres long and, in expert hands, was claimed to cure everything from headaches to acne.

From the late 1800s, medical practitioners used electro-massage machines – devices with electrically heated glass attachments that unleashed small vibrations – to treat a wide range of medical conditions.

"The idea that electricity could be used as a kind of stimulating energy to promote health ... was in vogue at the time," said the Powerhouse Museum's principal curator, Matthew Connell.

But the machine may have had a more controversial use.

Many scholars believe electromassage machines were the first examples of electric sexual vibrators because they were used to manage "hysteria" – a condition that implied a woman was suffering from sexual frustration, Mr Connell said.

No longer considered a medical condition, "hysteria" was characterised by symptoms including insomnia, muscle spasms and irritability.

The assistant curator, Erika Dicker, said some doctors were relieved by the invention of the electro-massage machine because they found the traditional treatment of hysteria – manual stimulation – tiring.

When the machines, which were first manufactured in the late 1800s, became compact enough, women started to keep them at home. But their popularity declined when they started appearing in pornography, Ms Dicker said.

Hi All, not sure I'm posting in the right area considering the jocular nature of this thread but I'll give it a shot.

I'm shopping around for a 40th gift for a mate who is a mad Blues man - he bleeds blue. I want to get him some sort of framed memorabilia type thing - probably a signed jersey. I have no idea about this stuff and just wanted to canvass a few experienced opinions before jumping in.

Right now I'm looking at a John Nicholls signed and framed jersey (signed on the jersey) for $650. Alternatively there's a team of the century framed jersey where they can place a signed card (can select from a few players) and put a couple of pics of said player in the frame at the bottom like a mini montage for $550.

Bear in mind this isn't for an investment - it's more an awesome pool room type of thing. Are those prices outlandish?, any better ideas?.
I'd welcome any advice.
Cheers
