Musical legend, poet, social activist and icon Gil scott-Heron has sadly passed away at the age of 62:

Gil Scott-Heron, the poet and recording artist whose syncopated spoken style and mordant critiques of politics, racism and mass media in pieces like “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” made him a notable voice of black protest culture in the 1970s and an important early influence on hip-hop, died on Friday at a hospital in Manhattan. He was 62 and had been a longtime resident of Harlem.

One of the true greats and very sad news.

I have a couple of compilations entitled "Black and Proud" which features his most political music and it is brilliant stuff. He was way ahead of his time but at the right time if that makes sense.

I have only recently bought his 2010 album "I'm New Here" and was just this last week wondering if he was going to bring something new out this year...
