I've been doing some thinking about negativity. In the past I have been pretty brutal at times bagging a few players that I thought were detrimental to the team's on field performance. Paul Bower, Brock McLean, Warnock, Gibbs, and (even) Kane Lucas come to mind.

SO I have had an epiphany* of sorts.

JAB! It isn't like the Club is purposefully picking blokes who it thinks are going to purposefully stink up the joint!

So my apologies to forum members if some of my short sentenced poison has detracted from your enjoyment of the forum and support of Carlton.

In future I will avoid general negative statements about individual players- every one of whom by stint of the fact wearing the Club colours is best choice by definition. No one is perfect and these players are in the main pretty young blokes who can have an off day or more - for all sorts of reasons - we as supporters never know all the story.

There are positive ways to communicate a player's less than satisfactory performance. It has been a shyte year in many ways for Carlton supporters- no need for heavy handed smacking down of the players or the Club - achieves nothing except spreading a black cloud of fugly all over the joint.

I am looking forward to positive developments at Carlton because all in all, the signs are pointing to improvement in many areas. Go The Blues.

It might be just me but I don't mind a little negativity being expressed, because we're all feeling the same thing. The club has underperformed in a lot of areas and thats why we come here to discuss things. I tend to stay away from player criticism most of the time, but I don't mind commenting on the off-field stuff that can be decided by those charged with club decision making. Anyway, carry on..

JustaBattler . Any fair minded person doesn't blame the player for who they are, as they didn't pick themselves coming to our club.

Players should though have a pretty good idea of what they're getting themselves in to............but even here some are forced by parents who wish to live vicariously through their kid. One would be surprised for how many kids didn't choose their own path.

I liked Bower, Hartlett, Browne, Hampson, O'Hailplin, O'Keeffe, Collins etc etc as they were nice mostly nice people that for one reason or another didn't quite meet the potential foreseen by recruiters.

It's the players that have talent and show enough just to keep the ball rolling I have issues with.

Even then HARKER it really is the Coach's and MC job to either get the best out of the player OR replace him with a better option if available...

I have been thinking about how to say the same thing positively - rather than negatively... for example:

McLean is not the fastest player on our list - what is the cost to the team of his lack of speed, do the benefits he delivers outweigh these costs in this upcoming game?

The best thing for Kane Lucas to do would be to learn how to be a better tackler- I suspect if he got this right he would also be a better attacking player.

Bryce Gibbs as he is will always be a starting player for Carlton - I'd like to see him develop a harder edge to his game which is all that he needs to do to really lift his team mates - Murphy can't do it all alone.

Man,I hope no one from the bay sees this well disguised chink in your armour!.
Good luck and may the force be with you.
Nah,I've always enjoyed your posts wherever they pop up on BF.
I admire the new positive outlook though JAB.
One in all in!!.

It's absolutely their job to get the best from what they have.
The harder job though is to have one eye on the present and one on the future.
Is Malthouse doing this? Don't know for sure but I think he is. Malthouse is on record: "I want to leave this club in better shape than when I joined it"

McLean won't get faster. He just has to be used right and every time I see him scouting Warnock it works.
That's McLean's lot and when it doesn't work any more........................................... it's time to move on.

Lucas will never become a good tackler. It's not in him no matter how much we want it to be.
His best attributes have to be utilized and if they don't come up to scratch...............it's time to move on.

Gibbs is a beautiful user of the ball and has a great delivery up the ground.
If that doesn't somehow fit into the bigger picture of things then...............................

Malthouse has to be allowed to work-in the right blend of players to meet his objectives.
They're not all there yet but we will get closer. We moved on ten players last year and had have Malthouse got everything he wanted, it would have been more. The spillage is coming.

I for one look forward to your specific negative statements about individual players.

"His socks arent pulled up to the same height!"
"I dont like his posture!"
"He needs to put on 4.2 Kgs before he can consider himself AFL ready!"

And so on and so forth :thumbsu:

I promise I will never ever mention a player's sock height or posture....:p

the only rules on the Bay is go in hard and if in doubt - go harder :thumbsu:
even so there are some posters on the Bay who are masters at pithy genteel one liners -
ya got to respect understatement and humour.

I dont mind negative criticism of players for the club... despite what thy says, I do believe that everyone has the right to comment on someone's bad day at the office. What I do mind, however, is mindless abuse towards those players. God knows I was rather vitriolic towards some of our players back in the dark days. Then someone posted a pic of Jordan Russell with big footy open in the background and I realised that some of the players might actually have accounts on here and could be reading some of the comments towards them. Made me sit back and think.

Imagine a footballer who has a facebook, twitter and instagram account who suffers from depression. Just imagine that they have a bad day at work and are feeling really shit with themselves and they log into facebook or twitter or instagram and start reading through the person abuse being thrown at them and and linger over one such abusive post.

Before you launch out in a vitriolic attack on a player who had a bad game... just ask yourself if it is stuff that you could handle being hurled at you from people you dont know. Just because you are anonymous on here doesnt mean that players dont read this shit. We already know that Raphalel Geminder (Ruffy) from the Carlton board has posted on here. Luca from the media department has posted on here. There are a large number of players/board members/general staff who are connected to a lot of supporters and players on twitter and instagram and they all see this shit.

If the comments you want to spray about a player on any media or at the ground are comments which would cause you to flinch if they were directed towards you... keep them to yourself.

Having recently been crucified by some of JABs choicest words, I can't believe I'm saying this. Life and these forums would be boring if we all agreed and spouted nothing but praise, always good to have someone play devils advocate.

Definitely nothing wrong with criticisms of individuals or the club - it's our club! We have every right to.

It's the spirit in which it is given that's important. Mindless attacks and non-constructive criticism generally isn't received well and rightly so. Particularly when it's sustained rhetoric. Fair criticism that is put across reasonably is more than welcome IMHO :)
