What I reckon (as if anyone cares):

Another good game of footy - at least the final 3 quarters - I didn't go to the game, but got home in time to watch the ABC coverage, which began at the second term.

I picked Port 61-96 on the Footytreble this week, fully expecting that Port would be a class too good for the Bays, and further aided by the initial bye. Having seen (three quarters of) the match I don't think the eventual margin did it justice.

Port was very good, make no mistake about that. Hard at the contests and the ball, definitely a skill level above the Bays. Furthermore Port played a remarkably clean game, very good to watch. Port easily thrashed Glenelg in the ruck - on the few occasions when Angwin or Golding did get a tap, they often knocked it straight to a Magpie - and Port's full back line was rock-solid. Spanagel was superb floating around on the half-back line, the Glenelg backs & midfielders kicking up forward were able to pick him out with uncanny frequency.

However I don't think the Bays did too badly either. There were periods when they certainly dominated the play. The first 14 minutes of the third quarter was pretty much all Glenelg, though they could only eke out a few scores to show for it. Glenelg had the ball in their side of the ground for much of that 14 minutes. Port's defence was watertight. Caused the Bays many frustrations. Compounded by the fact that Glenelg still doesn't have a consistent winner on the full forward line.

Nevertheless, as a Glenelg supporter it was not a bad game to watch. The Bays stuck at the task for the whole match, only looking tired towards the end of the final term. This is certainly better than some efforts in recent years where the Bays would hang their heads and let the opponents run away with the match. It gives me some hope to see them having a crack at it, fighting back from several goals behind. In the end though Port was simply too good - in another class. Good luck to them.

Macca - In response to your comments regarding the match (in another thread), I am forced to surmise that:
  1. You went to another game by mistake
  2. Your cyclopean view of the world has distorted your perception of reality, or
  3. You are trying to stick it up Easty

    I suspect #3.

    However I do agree with you regarding the poor play-on decision on Angwin (was it him?). Whether or not Angwin was playing on is immaterial - my gripe is the lack of consistency in the umpiring. Bienke got pinged for the exact same thing earlier, losing a mark because of it. If the umpires were consistent, then Angwin would also have been pinged. Or better still, neither of them. Either way it cost Port a goal. Other than that I think the umpires did a pretty good job.

    Oh well. South next week, I think. Becomes a pretty crucial game for both clubs. South would be keen to get a win up, especially since it's a home match. The Bays are looking for a solid start to the season. Both teams would have this pencilled in as a must-win.

yes i was trying to stick it up easty.
BUT..port dominated the whole ground. There was two periods i thought where glenelg had better edge of play. First 10mins of last quarter, and first 15m of the second quarter...glenelg had all the play but could only get 2 goals.
Every Port player was a winner except for Mcguiness who looked lost, and very over weight.
I thought Glenelg played fairly bad It wasnt a thrashing but Port didnt kick straight..was a har dwind as well. If port kicked straight (we missed a few easy ones in the second quarter). Ports defence was unbelivable..ive never seen so many marks from defenders before. Glenelg had great run with the umps with that very competent and outstanding individual Richard WIlliams umpiring...norwood loser. ALso, only one holding the ball in the whole game!!

Anyway, I thought Lyle struggled again and unfortunately, for Braden, looks to have a long season with the Pies. I thought we looked like a team in need of a run and I'm glad we struck the Bays and not one of the better teams first up.
The umpiring was attrocious!! It's little wonder that AFL listed players get caught holding the ball so much when they go back to the AFL. The umpires let a guy hang on to the ball for 5 minutes in the SANFL and then their only decision is to ball it up. Very frutrating and confusing!!
For me, the best player on the ground, by a mile, was Jared Poulton.

well I find it funny that you think Richard Williams helped Glenelg ! He is known for hating us, I even heard on the radio in the morning that Glenelg officials were not happy with the allocation of the umpires for this game, and you must have been at another game because Angwin got in Glenelgs best

Richard Williams has publicly stated he hates Port Adelaide with a passion. He has stated on 5AA, and in paper that he hates Port. He is a very big Norwood fan. You watch the 98 GF, and tell me if he umpires fairly both ways!!

PLUS...lets have a look at Angwins stats:
10k 1h 6m 1goal.

Mind you somehow he got in front of better players for glenelg such as:
Martin Mellody - 20touches 5 marks
Burke - 14 touches 4 marks
Stephens - 13 touches 4 marks
Thompson - 13 touches 5 marks 1 goal
Raidis - 14 touches 4 marks 1 goal
D Raidis - 16 touches 4 marks

Angwin had 11 touches...thats not even 3 touches a quarter!

but mind you - you probably think every glenelg player played well yesterday

well why were the glenelg officials seething about him then, and if you dont know the past well, him and graham cornes dont see eye to eye, williams even took court action I heard over some comments
I am only telling you what the paper had as glenelgs best about Angwin, but there is no doubting he has a future

Do you even go to any Glenelg matches? Somehow I doubt it - none of your crap about the games, seems to appear until Sunday morning - Thank god for the Sunday Mail, hey Easty? Judging by your posts, thats where you seem to pull your supposed 'expert opinions' from.

Another thing - if you lived "out in the country" like you say you do, and the closest SANFL ground is Noarlunga Oval - The nearest country area would be Myponga. I strongly doubt whether you would travel that far for games each week...

it only takes a bit over half an hour to get to glenelg and yes I do go to games. Well I did post stuff on glenelg last night you peanut
