I am thinking of buying a PS2, is it possible to get a mod chip for it now? or are they banned in this country?

Easier and cheaper to get a modchip for the Xbox.

PS2 chips are illegal, whereas Xbox chips aren't. You will still be able to find some that will be able to do an 'upgrade' for the PS2, if you look in your local Trading Post. Like I said, they usually call PS2 chips, 'upgrades', so it's not so obvious what they are doing.

When did Sony win that court case? I've never heard of that and as far as I know the prices are still the same.

I've been quote $180 for a Sony chip, although you can find places cheaper.

Sony initially, lost the case, but appealed and won. They have also recently been made illegal in the UK.

Court finds for Sony in modchip case

A full bench of the Federal Court has upheld an appeal by Sony Computer Entertainment against a ruling in a case involving a seller of modchips.

The case against Eddy Stevens, who was selling modchips which could be used to circumvent copyright controls on the Playstation game console, went in Stevens's favour last July.

Sony appealed against the ruling in September. The full bench handed down its verdict yesterday.

The decision only applies to selling modchips and does not make owning one illegal.

The court judgement in favour of Sony is a setback for the consumer watchdog, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, which intervened in the case last year saying it was seeking to defend the rights of millions of Playstation owners.

As I said, this was after an appeal by Sony, after they initially lost the case.

Wow i hadnt heard about that. So theroetically you can buy a modchip from OS and get it delievered and then installation wouldnt be illegal as long as you dont get caught by customs.

Although still $185 aint too bad really, considering you save about $50-70 a game :)

My xbox chip is going to be 2 years old by the time i go back to oz too. geat little system those.
