Goddard

End of trade week, after Saints have made any moves etc.

So we've let him go for a question mark, if you were curious.
Curious because I didn't know exactly how it works. I suspect you didn't have any choice but to let him go given salary cap issues you've had in recent years. You'd be crazy to chace a replacement this year though. Much bette to be "hard done by" and get the compo. Front load a few other contracts with the money you had earmarked for Goddard and then swoop on someone next year.

Well run clubs will benefit greately from free agency. Interesting times ahead.

I'd rather have 5 really good players on my team than 15 "above average" players like how Richmond a perusing the likes of Knights and Chaplin. The likes of Moloney @ 250k/yr are definitely going to help you jump a few ladder spots? Just ask Melbourne. You have to pay for quality.

Good deal for Essendon, hopefully Goddard is in the granny next year only for us to beat them. But kudos to Hird and co.

In terms of salary I rationalize it as mcveigh, monfries and slattery = Goddard and 2 draftees or rookie upgrades.
We may not be able to front load cos of Hurley, Ryder and Stanton's deals, but smart cap structuring should hold us in good stead

Great work by the Dons - who would say no to turning Monfries into Goddard?

Essendon and the Tigers are being aggressive, while other up and comers like North seem more content to rebuild exclusively through the draft. Interesting to see what approach works best.

Does anyone find it strange that the reported offer from St Kilda was ~$500k x 3 years and the deal Essendon have offered is ~$800k x 4 years?

Did they really need to offer an extra $1.7m to get the deal done?

I'm staggered that the Saints weren't prepared to (a) pay him more than wha they were for the current contract & (b) up the ante to try and keep him.

The fact that they were virtually paying unders for the past few seasons really left the door wide open for him to look elsewhere and there was always going to be one club prepared to pay a bundle to get him.

Would have been crazy to match that offer, would have put stress on our salary cap for a few more years. To contend we need key position players which we may now be able to get.

You blokes need the picks more anyway.

It's rebuild time for the saints.

Have you watched him play the last couple of years? He has been more of a liability than an asset, he's been been more interested in getting in scraps on the field and playing golf rather than playing good footy. His on field attitude has been pretty poor, he isn't getting any younger either and already looks to have lost a bit of pace and his trademark high leap. It's no coincidence we had two of our best wins this year when he was out suspended. For all those reasons he wasn't worth paying him big bucks on a 4 year deal just to keep him.

He might be able to turn his career around at Essendon but at his age I doubt he will get any better.

Waters has virtully said he isn't worth more than what they offered, and he's right. In his career (what 10 or 11 years) he has only played 1 very good season, 2010, and probably half a very good season in 2009. Prior to his knee (2008?) he was being called a draft flop. His 2011 and 2012 seasons were back to where he played his first 100 games. He just isn't worth big coin.

St Kilda shouldn't get any compensation for him.

Shouldn't be rewarded for making a crapper offer.

rules say otherwise

hey we have more players you can pay overs for. hows raph clarke sound, surely worth atleast 600k for 4 years. we could then argue our selves into a late first round compo pick

So you will be happy if the AFL give you a second round pick for him given that he was such a liability?

They should get Essendons 1st round pick.

Why should other clubs lose a spot in the draft because of Essendons benefit? It's a ridiculous scenario.

It's the same rules for everyone, mate. Not sure why a North supporter would be taking this so hard. How many posts is it now?

If he is such a poor player and a liability, prefers Golf, has a poor attitude and has lost pace and his leap and was suspended for two games how did he finish fourth in your B&F this year?

Dempster, Montagna and a 32 year old bloke with a dodgy ticker?

Jarryn Geary?

I think you just shot yourself in the foot.

You obviously know very little about footy if you are questioning Dempster, who was AA btw.

Oh, i just noticed you also questioned Hayes, no need to reply as it is now perfectly clear you know nothing about footy.

If you take into account their age, then i'm not so sure it is such a huge diffference. If Goddard was going to Hawks, Swans, Pies or WCE, I think it is a great move due to their being 100% mix for the flag. No doubt on these teams..a lot of doubt on the Bombers.

I'm not so sure the Bombers will get a flag in the next 1-2 years which means his time will be up. I know he has signed for 4 years but bloody hell....30+ (May) during the 2015 season and all he will be doing is raking in his pay check.

If you keep Monfries then it is a nice piece of FA work. If you lose Monfries directly for salary cap reasons, then Hirdy may have been channelling Vossy!
