Just listened to the full Tony Cochraine interview with SEN

Heard him state the Suns need to pretty much scrape together whatever and wherever they can to find 300k to run there academy.

300k wouldn't even pay for a handful of coaches :'(

I'm well aware the Swans spend on average over 1million a year on there academy.

We'll never be the top Dog outside of VIC without putting in similar $$$ to grow our locals

Doesn't matter. Apparently we've been gifted premierships with all our concessions and are going to dominate the AFL for a decade or more.:drunk:

This is where PR/Admin comes in, need to be hitting up and appealing to local/state business (maybe Gov, though that seems almost negligible).

Bowes and Scheer will help that if marketed properly.

Hey Knightmare, I know it's early but do you know if the Suns have any academy prospects in the 2017 draft class that are expected to go in the first round?

Brodie Foster (midfielder) is one to watch. Unclear whether he is a first rounder at this stage, but would be in the mix for first round selection.

Got no doubt we are going to have to use one of our later picks on Williams , has serious pace will be good to see how he goes against the best.

Looks like a good shot for this year with his running ability. So I think you likely are right there.

Bowes and Scheer likely top 10?
Knightmare
Jeez the Suns have it rough.

Bowes probably top pick.

Scheer a possible top 10 pick.

Gold Coast could always trade for the top overall selection. Then bids on GWS talent eg. Macreadie, Setterfield, Perryman etc sequentially until GWS decide not to match on one of those, and then go for Bowes at a discounted rate (from a points perspective).

So there are ways for Gold Coast to work the system.

But overall the take-away message should be, with such high level academy players. Be excited rather than upset at the cost, as being that well regarded that such a high pick/number of points suggests you're getting some terrific players in the door who have the ability to make a difference to winning, and at a slightly discounted rate under the academy points system.

Do you know his background? Is he a Gold Coast local?

Might be hard to say but would you rate Bowes higher than Mills and Heeney at the same stage in their draft year?

That's interesting Knightmare, are you saying that if we bid on a GWS player, say McCreadie, Gws decide not to match the bid, we can renege and take Bowes anyway.. its like saying "nah, just kidding, you can have him will take our bloke" that can't be right.. have I misinterpreted you?

Yes lost in translation

We get both players in that example - McCreadie with our first pick and Bowes with later picks once some other team bids on him (i.e. Melbourne pick + some 2nd rounders)

Thanks OB I figured that just as I pushed send, doh!
I do like this potential senario and trading for number one shouldnt be as difficult as it has been traditionally in the past because Freo, for example wouldnt be able to get McCreadie or Bowes anyway.. taking number 4 and say Matera is still a win for them... that little bastard might be of use to us after all... ahhhh hahaha!!!

Not necessarily ahead, different players with different strengths, but in the same conversation certainly.

The premise was conditional on Gold Coast trading for pick 1 overall. Gold Coast could bid that pick on GWS talents until GWS decide not to match on one of them.

With every pick taken, any bid on Bowes will continue reducing.

Presuming Freo stop tanking and Bombers get the #1 pick the 2 proposals to trade for #1 would be:

Prestia leaves and is prepared to go to Bombers:

#1 for Prestia + #10 (Melbourne's pick) +/- exchange of later picks

Prestia stays:

#1 for #5 + #10 +/- exchange of later picks

And part of the last deal involves Essendon bidding on all the GWS academy players!!
Haha

With all that talent in GWS you probably don't want to piss them off if you want to trade for them down the line.

Anyone notice that despite Carlton having 3 picks in the top 15 last year not one of those picks were used for an academy bid for a GWS player. This was after they were able to get 3 players for a pick in the late 20's in the trade period - coincidence??

You know what we are due OB?
Some good luck, that's what...
Some continuity on the fitness front..
I want to see these 8 or 9 of our best 22 back by the Sydney game... then I want to see O'Meara and Swallow step into a team that is starting to hit its straps and has won a couple in a row, say by round 15... then I want to see us come home like a train and win 5 of the last 7... Im not worried about making finals this year, that ship has sailed... I just want this team to generate some excitement. .. to stick it up the Vico media who can't see that we are losing because we have 20 blokes on the injury list... people like Wayne Carey who reckons we dont play for each other.. (like he used to with Anthony Stevens' wife)..
I love our team... I wanna go through what the Bulldogs supporters are going through, what Port supporters went through a couple of years ago (they were so exciting) even Melb supporters are getting some high hopes... I keep thinking of our best 22 and thinking, not only 4 points but winning in style... it can turn around this year, it can happen quickly... and if it does Prestia, oMeara and Swallow will all want to stay...
