Good Friday

I like the idea of a GF rematch on Good Friday

I really couldn't care less who gets the day.

I'm for a GF rematch in round 1 to kick off the season, so in 2-3 years when "Churchy Vlad" gets the boot, play West Sydney vs the Gold Coast on Good Friday for all I care.

All I know is every sports loving Australian who is not offended by sport on good friday will be watching an NRL game this Friday, HELLO AFL, are you listening.

... Whilst i appreicate the Friday is the more important religious date -the reality is more australians come together on the Sunday - then the Friday.

So if you are going to have a day off - have the Sunday off.

Actually, the part underlinmed above is incorrect. However the last line is correct.

Its not the crucifixion (Good Friday) that's the most important core of Christian theology and belief (lots of folk were crucified back then), but rather the resurrection (a not so common occurrance) on Easter Sunday.

Hence, under (Catholic) canon law, no Mass is conducted on Good Friday, but merely a commemoration service - for which attendance (again under canon law) is not considered mandatory (for Catholics) in any way (unlike Sunday Mass).

Thus (as confirmed by Father Bob on TV the other day), there is no valid religious reason at all not to have footy on Good Friday (though he did say it should be played at night to avoid clashing with the 3 pm commemoration). If anything, (assuming one takes any notice of religous factors at all) it should be Easter Sunday that is footy free - but no one (including from the church) seems to voice any objection to Easter Sunday footy.

I don't know what agenda the AFL has for not having games on Good Friday. If they think it's for religious reasons, then they are simply wrong.

nah - it's the Friday - when Jesus supposedly died for our sins - thus cleansing all of humanity

No footy on Good Friday, or alternately, footy on Good Friday but no Good Friday public holiday.

If you're going to take advantage of the holiday, put up with some of the inconveniences that it is parcelled with. Like the pubs not opening until 12pm on Anzac Day.

Why should Good Friday be 'AFL exempt' if none of the other public holidays that fall within the AFL season are?

Anzac Day is a far more respected and celebrated public holiday than Good Friday yet the AFL sure as **** doesn't not play on that day (and rightly so).

I do not see the logic. And it would appear no other professional sports league outside of the AFL does either.

Without getting bogged down in semantics, it is a solemn day in the various Christian religions and, as a result, traditionally "festive" events (such as sport) have been avoided in countries which "observe" the day (as you do in Australia, where it is a public holiday). It is notable, of course, that the S14, NRL (and over here, Super League and the Championship, though not the EPL) have now chosen to play on Good Friday. Clearly Australian society is evolving away from the traditional manner in which the day is celebrated.

Not all public holidays are to commemorate solemn events, or events where respect should be paid. In fact Anzac Day, which is held by many to be "more" solemn, or deserving of respect, hosts one of the most famous AFL fixtures, as you've noted, however Anzac Day's dawn service is traditionally followed by social gatherings and celebration, unlike Good Friday (whose "celebration" is saved for Easter Sunday). Good Friday and Anzac Day are the only two "solemn" public holidays, however.

In any event, my point was that people are happy to get the day off for Good Friday (and Easter Monday and Christmas), but not willing to respect the reason why they get the day off.

By all means abolish Easter & Christmas and replace them with non-specific non-denominational public holidays and play footy on them until you're bleeding from the ears, but whilst Good Friday is gazetted as a public holiday, it ought be respected - even if that means no footy.

Good Friday footy will inevitably mean another Collingwood/Carlton/Essendon/etc. "blockbuster", so yeah I'm not fussed to miss out on another one of those.

Then again, we could have yearly BigFooty threads from Pies and Bombers fans telling us how Medhurst kicking a bag or Ryder rucking solo was 'just like' Jesus dying on the cross and they 'deserve' to be the teams playing that day...

That's specious reasoning.

This is just AA's lame attempt at having a sly pot shot at Christianity and nothing more. :o:thumbsd:

On the subject however, the AFL should fixture a Good Friday game and somehow tie the game towards promoting charities such as the Good Friday Appeal.

Seven would have to delay the telecast until the end of the Good Friday Appeal...

No one other than Victorians watches the Good Friday appeal. It certainly isn't broadcast in Sydney. Seem stupid not to have a blockbuster AFL game scheduled on the day/night when other codes play games.

I agree. There should be no public holiday, because it panders to a religion.
Have a holiday at a different time, for a different reason.

you mean like the 25th december.

that has no religious significance at all. (seriously, it doesn't)

EXPLAIN HOW

Presently Australians are gifted a public holiday to commemorate an event in a particular (in this case, Christian) tradition. Accordingly, that tradition ought be respected.

that's stupid logic.

there would be the same number of public holidays, regardless.

you should look into the secular thing.

its a public holiday, no more, no less.

any religious affiliation is purely coincidental.

All other arguments aside, I'm struggling to believe that a lot of you want footy on Good Friday because there's nothing to do on "the most boring holiday of the year".

Are we really so brain dead that we can't tolerate one quiet day a year?

Maybe some of you need to check out getalife.com

WHY? There are many other religious holdays in other religions we could have but we are would be better havng NONE!I find GF one of the most boring days of the year.

Oh and by the way if it is SO important to some christians why isnt it on the same day every year??They cant even agree amongst themselves as the Orthodox church have easter on other dates 3 out of 4 years.

The Appeal is only shown in Victoria.
Play a game between two non-Victorian teams, show it live on Channel 7 elsewhere in Australia; and Channel 7 can show another game somewhere else in the long weekend in Victoria.
It's tradition not to play Good Friday, but new teams provide an opportunity for new traditions. How about GWS v Gold Coast FC?
