man I hate this argument
one day in the rain you have to walk to work, you dont have a choice in the matter, I'm just making you do this because I believe if a person is drenched in rain once a year its good for their soul.
It doesnt matter that you're willing to get rained on any other day thats more convenient for you, it has to be this day because I said so

On this Good Friday, I went down to Crown with 5 mates and had a good time. We were going to go all out on the buffet but since it was 40 we ended up just getting fast food and had more money for other stuff. Had a good time despite nearly crashing on the way home....

Not really following the rain analogy.
All i'm saying is Good Friday is the only day of the year where everything is closed, get over it. You're struggling if you can't come to terms with Safeway being closed one day of the year.

you guys are all melbourne metropolitan people? i swear when i was living in melbs (st k) most of the pubs were open. i could be wrong though.
up in sydney for good friday just gone about half of shops were open. pub was open, golf club was open, pie shop was open. big supermarkets/malls, and bottle shops were closed but that was about it.

Not sure about Victoria but NSW is a bit variable. Small businesses are allowed to open, as are essential services like petrol stations. Pubs and stuff are generally required to be closed, unless they are in specifically exempted areas (e.g. tourist precincts).
It's all a bit confusing really. Half the businesses that are closed aren't actually required to be closed by law, but they close anyway because there is already an expectation that nothing will be open and they're not interested in paying penalty rates.

it would be a good day for a festival of some sort. get all the churchie's up in arms. christmas day likewise. i'm all for pissing off religious folks.
financially would probably be a disaster though. penalty rates, serious potential for low turnout, people actually wanting to spend time with their families. conversely you could get a lot of people who are just over the whole holiday thing.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the NFL play on Christmas day? Surely if the Americans can play footy on Christmas we can play on Good Friday?

it seems to more revolve around the broadcasters. from what i can follow there (in my quick 2 minute glance) is they aren't particularly keen on the christmas day games, assumably the viewership would be pretty low.

Most of the reasons private businesses (i.e. retail) shut down is due to the fact that staff want the day off and/or employers don't want to pay the penalty rates. So if something shut down it is most probably the decision of the individual business owner.
The only really noticeable one from my point of view is the lack of footy. Would probably watch a game but would rather not have Collingwood play as we always seem to get the public holidays anyway.

i eat the cheap red meat i bought the day before. seriously supermarkets just throw it away the closer easter gets.
i tend to spend the day in smug satisfaction that i've been able to procure cheap red meat, like one of those homemakers on a current affair program telling everyone how to grocery shop. i also eat chocolate. as a kid my parents didn't understand that eggs traditionally (because easter eggs are in the bible and everything..) are only given on the sunday to symbolize resurrection. easter chocolate is overpriced though, obviously, so it will be whatever someone has given me ahead of time. but i then go out after easter and procure some of the old easter supplies that are being thrown out by supermarkets and spend the next few days in smug satisfaction too.

Yes the NFL (and NBA) does play on Christmas Day - the NHL doesn't. If Easter falls during the MLB season games are played on both Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Good Friday is not even a national public holiday in the USA - it is only observed in about 10 of the 50 US states.

Cooked up some bacon and eggs and sat wondering yet again why Jews don't eat pork...
For the same reason they don't each shellfish, insects and other non-kosher foods.The Book of Leviticus lists both kosher and non-kosher foods. While the Torah doesn't explain why certain foods are banned, it seems more than coincidence that many of the foods that are non-kosher can carry potentially deadly infectious diseases (especially shellfish).
