Burns to give footy away for lure of Europe
The Advertiser
22jul04

RONNIE Burns is set to quit the AFL and backpack through Europe at the end of this season.

Burns, 31, and struggling with injury and form, can see the writing on the wall as Adelaide looks to rebuild its list with young players after a disappointing 2004 season.
"I'll see what happens at the end of the year but it looks like I'll be hanging up the boots and doing some backpacking overseas," Burns, nicknamed "Rockin' Ronnie" by team-mates, said.

"Adelaide is going for a youth policy at the moment and being the oldest player on the list now that Wayne (Carey) and Nigel (Smart) have retired, my time is nearly up.

"With six games to go this season they're going to want six games out of a young player instead of six out of Ronnie Burns.

"That's realistic and it's footy I suppose. The body has had it. It's a bit sore so there's a big chance there'll be no more Rock Star."

Burns' 154 games with Geelong and Adelaide have produced 262 goals, five leading goalkicker awards with the Cats and six finals.

Injuries have limited his opportunities in a Crows jumper to just 20 games and 23 goals.

"There's going to be opportunities further down the track, whether it's coaching or playing country footy," Burns said. "At this stage I haven't really thought it through."

He will be remembered as a great CROW as was Wayne

Seeya "rockin", it was nice to have you on the list, now shut the door on the way out.

Range rover's and alcohol don’t mix, just like a lazy left footed cat just isn’t a good mix with the AFC

Poor old Ronnie gets the rough-end of the pineapple from many on these boards and AFC supporters in general - apart from the one obvious off-field tribute to idiocy - he did his best for the club with an ailing body when he could take the field.

Quick recap.

We traded the useless Ben Finnin (since delisted without playing an AFL game) for him - and Geelong was/is still paying a hefty chunk of his wages.

In his first season at the club Ronnie played 18 games and kicked 23 goals - which at better than a goal a game return is probably more than we expected - and definitely more than we ever would've got from Finnin.

This season he's completely fallen away, only managing 2 games for 0 goals, but hey so what? At 31 years old and with his chronic hamstrings were we expecting any more?

Good luck to him.

Goodluck Ronnie Burns, you have had a great AFL career, always remembered him bobbing up and kicking 2-3 goals against us when he played with Geelong.Hold your head high Ronnie;)

To put it in a different perspective -

In his first 4 games at the club, he kicked 10 goals.
In his last 16 games, he kicked 13. Less than a goal a game.

For someone who doesn't have any recognisable skills on one side of his body, who can't play any position other than goalsneak, who is 31 years old, and with chronic hamstrings.....

WHY DID WE TRADE FOR HIM???????

And to me, this issue about Geelong paying his salary and it only costing us Finnin are both furphies.

Geelong were so keen to see Burns get out of town that they were willing to pay someone to take him. Doesn't that send alarm bells ringing to you? It does to me.

Secondly, if Finnin was such a dud, either (a) Geelong knew that and were prepared to include that as their price to get rid of Burns (more alarm bells) or (b) Geelong didn't know that and we could have prised a draft pick out of them instead.

Even if we didn't make the trade, assuming Finnin was on a 2 year deal, we delist him at the end of 2003 and we've got another kid with a preseason under his belt and maybe a game or two in the big league ready to push for a permanent senior spot next year.

Further, playing Ronnie in 18 games last year may just have ******ed the development of a younger goal-a-game small forward like Schuback or Skippy or even Reilly. His arrival also seems to have coincided with the decline of Matty Bode from a goal-a-game resting rover to the doghouse.

It was a deal that never ever made sense. I said that the day it was done, and I say it again now.

Good luck for the future, Ronnie.

You were not a good trade for the club, but that is not your fault.

You played one or two very good games, but the problem is that you did possibly hold back the development of our youngsters by being on our list.

Unfortunately you played your best football in your twenties and you were realy gone as a consistent player by the time you came to Adelaide.

See ya, don't let the door hit you on the @rse on the way out.
I don't have time for drink drivers....period.

This, coupled with the retirements of 'actual' champions Carey, W and Smart, N will surely drop our average player age down to a reasonable level:) With the direction of the club (ie drafting rather than trading) we should have a very young list next season. Hopefully we hit the Rising Star award a few times.

Don't agree, but water under the bridge now.
All these comments are in hindsight which of course means they're correct now.
But at the time I can agree with the rationale which has been flogged to death;)

Because we cannot replace retired players with Rookies.

Yep, otherwise every useless player on a list would be coerced to "retire" to bring rookies on.
