Burns to give footy away for lure of Europe
The Advertiser
22jul04
RONNIE Burns is set to quit the AFL and backpack through Europe at the end of this season.
Burns, 31, and struggling with injury and form, can see the writing on the wall as Adelaide looks to rebuild its list with young players after a disappointing 2004 season.
"I'll see what happens at the end of the year but it looks like I'll be hanging up the boots and doing some backpacking overseas," Burns, nicknamed "Rockin' Ronnie" by team-mates, said.
"Adelaide is going for a youth policy at the moment and being the oldest player on the list now that Wayne (Carey) and Nigel (Smart) have retired, my time is nearly up.
"With six games to go this season they're going to want six games out of a young player instead of six out of Ronnie Burns.
"That's realistic and it's footy I suppose. The body has had it. It's a bit sore so there's a big chance there'll be no more Rock Star."
Burns' 154 games with Geelong and Adelaide have produced 262 goals, five leading goalkicker awards with the Cats and six finals.
Injuries have limited his opportunities in a Crows jumper to just 20 games and 23 goals.
"There's going to be opportunities further down the track, whether it's coaching or playing country footy," Burns said. "At this stage I haven't really thought it through."

With the direction of the club (ie drafting rather than trading) we should have a very young list next season. Hopefully we hit the Rising Star award a few times.
