No I don't think so... It was only a couple of years ago International Rugby League was "Dead"... We now have people ringing the radio stations and saying its "better then origin".

For too long the media have death ridden the International game... Compare the World Cup in 2000 with the Union one in 2003, same scores, favourites won (England were favourites) but Rugby League copped so much stick, Union was PRAISED and predicted to overtake Rugby League in NSW & QLD… What has happened since? NRL/Rugby League has gone from strength to strength while the Union has gone down hill. Even in this series the only Rugby league news was the Great Grandma fiasco and the Mason V Kidwell crap, hardly anything about the footy, BUT the footy was bloody fantastic!

A crowd of 27,000 a few years back would have been A FANTASTIC crowd for a test match… Now it’s pathetic (Positive sign)… The week’s coverage for the final was non-existent because of the Ashes (And rightly so), but today the people on the radio only want to talk about the Magnificent game last night, and how they regret not going!!!

IRL is on a high, and with the likes of Sonny Bill, Benji Marshall, The VOLCANO, Matt Utai, Ropati etc to come back for the Kiwi’s, the trans-Tasman rivalry is going to overtake Origin IMO, throw the Poms in there (Who are improving every year), the WC in 2008 is going to be awesome! The only missing piece is the media and it's negative coverage of everything Rugby League.

International Rugby League is the pinnacle of our game...

What?

You got 30,000 for Australia v GB in 2002 for a mid-season game that GB were crushed 64-10.

You got 28,000 at Telstra last year for a Tri-Nations game.

And now you got 27,000 for a FINAL of the Tri-Nations.

27,000 isn't acceptable, when 40,000 are willing to watch Soccer for a meaningless Australia v Bahrain game (Australia had already reached the Asian Cup).

What's the bet the 2008 world cup final will be played in sydney,if it's promoted well then people might bother to turn up. We had no promotion for the tri nations what so ever and the 175,000 that turned up is not all so bad when you think about it . But People in Sydney are more interested in the NRL competition then the international game for some reason maybe the sydney public know the aussies going to hammer everyone so why show up, but after last nights game i'm sure people will come out in droves.Only two words describes last nights game BLOODY FANTASTIC.:thumbsu: :thumbsu: :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

Newcastle would have got 25/26,000 ,if the stadium is ever completed it has to be in the running for internationals

Disappointing crowd for a final, surely Brisbane would have been the preferred choice....and to LebaneseForces, we are talking about today...not four years + ago, the crowd was disappointing and when you consider they got over 44,000 to the Aus v GB match, maybe it should head North next time.

The point is Hardly Anyone in Sydney because of the Media respected IRL... I had no doubt at all the crowd's wouldn't be big (although there were DEFINATLEY over 30,000 there it was pretty packed), it's a fact that since Super League IRL has never been held highly in the media and the Sydney media is the worst of them all! If it wasn't for Willie Mason (And people hate him? He brings so much to the game) there wouldn't of been too much coverage (Besides the Grandma crap).
It's a shame because i am one of those people who support IRL with such passion that i put it above anything (Sporting wise). Maybe Sydney shouldn't get anymore games? But after saturday night people will have to start respecting it, because my God it's the Best Rugby League event in the world and saturday proved it.

Anyways i'm of the Firm belief NO Australia WC games should be in the Sydney (besdies maybe the final, if they make it)... Sydney should only get lebanon (If they make it) games and some of the Islands etc because of the large community support they would get... If Lebanon make the world cup, i have NO doubt we would pack out Parramatta stadium for all our games!

Whether you like to believe it or not... Socceroos and the Wallabies are held A LOT higher in the media then the kangaroos and that shows in the crowds!

I blame the inept ARL for that! DO the ARL have media officiers? If they do, there doing a crap job!

Hardly an excuse.

That same Wallabies/Socceroos stigma is the same in Brisbane.

47,000 for Australia v Paraguay (soccer)
52,000/45,000 for Australia v NZ/South Africa (union)
44,000/44,000 for Australia v NZ/GB in 2006 (league)

Australia v Bahrain wasn't hyped and was meaningless, and soccer isn't Sydney's no. 1 code. RL is. And the game was hyped.

Sydney supporters have been generally spoilt as far as top quality sporting events go. They have had Australia's only Bledisloe Cup match for a number of years. They get the NRL grand final and they get a fair share of SOO games. They get a Cricket Test match when most people are on summer holidays. And they generally turn out for those games in numbers.

But the corollary of that is that the other venues get lesser quality matches. And, in Brisbane's case, they support those matches almost without exception. When Sydney gets the lesser quality (or less important) match, they don't support it anywhere near as well.

I don't think that will ever change. But it does mean that Sydney people need to realise that it is not an entitlement to always have the top quality events. Sporting bodies will occasionally reward Melbourne, Brisbane and even Perth for turning out to see Aus v Wales in rugby union by giving them a crack at Aus v NZ. If Sydney supported the lesser events the way it supports the top quality events, then the rest of the country would never have a look in at the Bledisloe Cup.

Having said all of that, Sydney should get the RL World Cup, IMO. It is the traditional heartland of the sport and is the centre of the premier RL competition. I think Sydney people would turn out for a RL World Cup final because they do appreciate the top quality events. I wouldn't bother playing too many of the preliminary matches or semi finals there though.

I agree, it would be quite stupid not to hold the final at the biggest stadium (which is good for RL) in Aus......although i believe S.S is a better stadium, Sydney is the heartland and deserves at least the final and a couple of the latter finals.

Sydney does have a history of turning up to big events as you've said, i think the low turnouts to the other events could be slightly to do with the promotion, or lack of it and also the amount of events Sydney does get, give a city an event rarely and they'll turn up, but you give a city too much and they may lose interest.

I agree that sydney is the heartland of RL particlarly the NRL and the grand final should never be moved... but Brisbane supports international footy. The 08 world cup final will be a full house in brissy no doubt, can you really say that about Sydney? And we won't even boo ricky if he is still coach (well just a little)
