Anybody here use Googledocs? Last week I paid for office 2007 (luckily I'm a student so only $75) and it got me thinking....do we need to buy this stuff any more?

Googledocs is the first wave of real cloud computing that we will see, it's fantastic and FREE!!! you can create the google equivalent of Word docs, excel spreadsheets, powerpoint and many more. Best part is, all of these can be saved to native Microsoft office file formats such as .doc .xls etc so if you create them in googledocs they can be opened later in office.

I recently read a case study where an upcoming tech business couldn't afford to purchase the license for office on every pc and saved over $30,000 by using google docs.

What do you guys think of it?

I use it when writing a blog, as it's a proper word processor, and I can post the finished copy straight to my blog. I've been meaning to use it more, but am still stuck in the Word habit.

I think it's great and will start a real trend in computing. It's practically like having your own VPN or Intranet, as you can save something at home, and then access it from uni/school/work without worrying about flash drives.

Of course, there's also OpenOffice, which is pretty decent free Office software, that can be saved to all formats, if you're on a tight budget and don't want to pirate.

Yeah....ummm. Look up Open Office.

Yeah, I'm aware of it. I thought the concept of googledocs or zoho was better discussion point as it's the future of computer apps.

In x amount of years, Office will not exist in the format we see it today and will be cloud based. I'm sure microsoft will have their scheme of keeping you purchasing or subscribed to their product. Googledocs though, is available now, and has some pretty handy features.

As P.A.F.C it is like having your own vpn. For uni I'm constantly saving files on my usb / external HDD and also sending via email (or in my case hosted website) to backup, especially when you have a presentation.

So anything to add to the discussion, other than being a smartarse?
