In car gps i take it? Not a nautical or portable hiking one?

Tom Toms are pretty much the best on the market i reckon for the price

Have one for running and one for the car. Garmin both. Both excellent and easy to use.

GPS has a million functions... Sports, navigation, construction, automotive, ect... What do you want to use GPS for? I am currently studying surveying at university so I might be of assistance.

Sorry for the late reply to the Q's.

I am after a car GPS, just for Perth mainly, but I will take it when I am away I am sure.

Am in Sydney now with a rental. It came with a simple Garmin one. I must say I am not impressed. The driving instructions are quite confusing, although the unit is very easy to use. Not enough use of simple stuff, like bear right or keep left, so you know what lane to be in when the road splits. It makes driving quite difficult in a place like Sydney, where there are lots of those kinds of roads and you have no idea where they go to.

The instructions on the standard Commodore rental car I had last time were much more clear, although the unit was a pain in the arse to use. You had to enter in the suburb and address exactly or it would not find it. Also, you had to use a scroll wheel to do that and it kept on jumping a letter when you would click to select the letter. Pain in the arse! But the instructions were great!

I was looking at a Tom Tom one. I figure all the taxi drivers have them, so they must be a good balance between price and features. You would think the taxi drivers would know what to buy! I know nothing about the models though. I also know nothing about what features I should look for.

I have a Tom Tom GO720 and it works beautifully.
It's really easy to use and is very clear to understand.

P.S. Beware the bluetooth on it, has lots of problems with phone compatibility:(

Ive got Tom Tom XL and the old lady the model up XL australia or some shit like that and they work very very well

I was looking at the 730, looks real good. Seems to visually explain the instructions the best. Haven't checked it out properly yet though.

It's basically the same as the 720 but has something called IQ Routes which uses your own driving style to determine the best routes and to calculate arrival time better (mind you my 720 does a very good job at that).

It also has this thing called Active Lane Guidance which would be really helpful for when I am in places like Sydney.

There is no such thing that is publicly available, any attempt to do this is bullshit. There is just not that kind of information available.

The sort of thing you're talking about sounds like TracerTrak. I'll give you the web link -> www.tracertrak.com.au. I just had a look at Fonesentinal. It looks like they use mobiles that require phones with GPS to be activated. TracerTrak is what my company uses which has dedicated tracking devices, and a web application for the monitoring interface.
