There was a report on 10 news tonight about Johncock. Missed most of it but sounded like he was going to be eased back into training. If anyone saw it can you update us on what is going on.

They said he was training by himself so he could attend counselling to improve his lifestyle and attitude towards training and the rest of the group. The club said they were happy with his progress so far. On 5aa they mentioned a close relative had recently passed away.

Hopefully he is fit enough to play once he gets himself sorted. Which hopefully he does, because we are a far better team with a fit and dominating stiffy down back :)

Agree, thanks for that:thumbsu:

He has been dealing with family issues (by the sounds of the 5AA comments, a death in the family) and hasn't come back fit. He is working with a physical trainer and getting the pounds off.

With the exception of the death part, this is just the standard Graham Johncock preseason. He is out of shape again. I know some will cut me down, but we should have traded him. He no doubt has heaps of talent, he just badly lacks work ethic and discipline. Hes a fat lazy smoker who will never reach his full potential. Letting him get away with yet another fat showing at preseason isnt good enough IMO. He is setting a poor example for the young guys at the club and the club are allowing him too. I'm surprised NC has put up with it. I would have thought he would have physical condition clauses in his contract by now. Get fat and you dont get paid!!

At the AGM on Tuesday Neil was asked about Johncock. His response was that he is training by himself early in the mornings so that he can attend his course during the day. The course is going very well and Neil said that he hasn't seen Graham as happy and well as he currently is for a very long time.

First and foremost it is all about Graham's well being.

Hey Nikki - any other news or scandal from the AGM?

I think this is an excellent example of why our Club is so good. Putting the person first is fantastic. Of course we will get the benefits of a happier Graham Johncock.

The man is a star in my view and if he is 100% is the best small defender in the AFL.

Complete Garbage Graham is to important to our team makeup.

Fair enough if the situation is irretrievable, but if he can be helped, the club and player are both winners.

He's got a ton of talent. I admit I've always been frustrated by the smoking, and I have no doubt that it will shorten his career, but to write him off is pretty extreme.

From what Craigy said sounds like he's going well, which is great news.

Is this true? Is he really out of shape again? I was under the impression he'd been working at it over the pre-season, for the first time ever.

My understanding is that he requested an extra few weeks off at the start of preseason (a few players did actually), presumably to go and deal with the death in the family talked about in this thread (though I wasn't aware of that, I just heard it was "family issues", which would cover a death I guess). When he did come back after a few weeks he was out of shape and overweight so they've sent him to a physical trainer to work one-on-one purely on his fitness.

It may be wrong but that's what I've heard from inside the club.

Craigy said a bit about each player, which I will add to their threads in the locker room at some stage. Or I might do a post with relevant info from the AGM on the board. Have to spend the time to put it all together, unfortunately real life is rearing it's ugly head atm. There were some very good things said the new recruits and we got a real good look at the new facility as well, which didn't quite go for the 3 hours that Trevor Jacques promised.

This sounds very interesting!

I'd start a new thread about it all, and then if there is anything particularly important about any players I'd repost the info in their locker room thread.

IMO your comments are a little unfair and you have made some assumptions without understanding or knowing all the facts

As a member of the AFC I am very proud of the club and the way they have supported Stiffy, yes the club can take the easy option and cut a player or they can show a duty of care, support the player and work to a solution that is in the best interest of both the player and the club.

Reading the article below made me proud to be a member of the AFC and I am looking forward to seeing Stiffy bounce back in 2009

  • ADELAIDE has forecast a big 2009 from one-time bad boy Graham Johncock, saying he is a reformed character.
Defender Johncock completes a six-week lifestyle management training course next week and the Crows say he will emerge a better person and player after off-field indiscretions derailed his 2008 season.

"The course has been terrific for Graham," commercial operations general manager Phil Harper said.

"Craigy (coach Neil Craig) has commented that the Graham of old is back at training, he's got his cheekiness back and that we'll see the best of him on the field next year."

After representing the Dream Team in the Hall of Fame match against Victoria in May, Johncock lost his way and ran foul of his Crows team-mates.
They were so concerned about his erratic behaviour that they took the strong step of banning him from games against Sydney and Carlton in Rounds 17 and 18 for "failing to meet the standards of preparation".
But after two games for the Port Magpies in the SANFL, Johncock returned to play in the Crows' elimination finals defeat against Collingwood. However, Adelaide insisted Johncock, 26, undertake off-season counselling to prevent any ongoing problems.

"The lifestyle course was identified as being something which will help Graham - now and down the track," Harper said.

"There were a few little things which occurred last season which resulted in him losing the trust of the playing group, which caused him to be dropped.
"While it's all very well to do that, it's no good thinking that a two-match ban will fix everything.
"In consultation with Graham we felt he needed some more help to make this a long-term fix and to get the best out of himself.
"And so far everything is going well. Graham's been very diligent in undertaking the course and the club is very pleased with how he's going - on and off the field."

The day-time course, which is understood to run three days a week, means Johncock has had to regularly train away from his team-mates.
When they have had nine-to-five training sessions, Johncock, who has played 147 games for the Crows, has trained privately at 7am under the watchful eye of members of the coaching staff.

"He's done everything asked of him and I'm sure he'll be a very important player for us next year," Harper said. :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

couple years ago or even just 1 year ago i would of said you're crazy, but as another pre-season starts up and he comes back in bad shape yet again, it just doesnt look like hes going to take the next step. He could of been a gun midfielder if he wanted to be.

Where does it state that he is out of shape?? One posters opinion doesn't mean it is true.... I have nothing but faith in our football club that Graham will return to his best form ;)

I think that's the issue, Graham has mostly been a very good footballer but appears to have the ability to press on well beyond his 'best form' of his career thus far. Even without being super fit he will probably have a good season but not to his full potential.

That is the most frustrating thing about him. We hear he wants to play in the midfield, yet is unwilling to make sacrifices to make it happen. Everything we have seen of Stiffy has been natural ability.

I am a big fan of his, but feel we will never see him at his best.

The word I've heard from within the club is that he came back unfit, but that it wasn't unexpected. If this article says he's proceeding as hoped, that's good.

It is pretty obvious something is wrong and if thats the word stabby has heard it wouldnt be unusual. I agree about we havent seen his best either, if we did he should be playing in the midfield.
