AFL Grand Final Grand Final, 2017: Adelaide v Richmond

Some of us older generation who survived the eighties as a St Kilda fan will look at your post and scoff. The fact is the 21st century Saints were in contention for over a decade and we (as fans, and as consumers of the AFL product) became quite accustomed to being a good team.

The club learned a lot - especially how it failed to fully capitalise on the years where we were good, I think it is reasonable that they expected to win each of 2009 and 2010 and the premiership cup would do a lot of talking for them. We came within a bee's dick of ultimate success and yet it was not enough. The club could not be blamed for loading up and giving it one more go each time, despite the obvious chasm approaching as our good players started retiring without comparable replacements.

We had become accustomed to being a good club, a contender, and we find it hard coming back to the harsh reality of rebuilding and being out of contention. There are signs that we are on track but many of us saw short cuts like raiding other clubs for their most talented players as being the only way to get back to where we belong. The big clubs have an edge on us in being able to attract serious talent, but we have moved from being a joke (the party club) to being a destination club. We can thank the professionalism of our operations and list management staff who are the first faces the draftees and their managers see. Some fans don't realise just how important these relationships are / can be. We are playing the long game. We have a developed strong ties and a sense of competence and professionalism in this industry. We will continue to build on that.

I think we need to play finals and signal to the rest of the competition that our trajectory is up. It will indicate to the players that we are eager to poach that we offer a greater probability of future ultimate success than the club you are currently at. This is what the players want.

We all understand your pain. We feel it as well. Imagine if you had followed the club through the 1960's and 70's when we were professional and great only to degenerate into the basket case we were in the 80's. The fans had reason to despair. We just about ceased to exist.
This.

Perspective.

Of course being paid what you are worth is nice but success with your mates is even better. They can have both if they come here.

This period of growth was essential given the position we were in with our list. Now we are back on track in what is a very even competition.

Klldonan, your "moderator's post" is akin to a "captain's goal."
Very well said :clapping::clapping::clapping:

A really great post there Kildonan......as someone who jumped on in the early 70's.....I can relate oh so well with what you have said.

Yep back in those days we celebrated if the little league won a game.
The cheering from the stands at Moorabbin when that happened.......any excuse to cheer something was grabbed.

During those dark dark early to mid 80's....I remember a mate of mine said that he hadn't seen a win live for over 2 years......it was just that he'd missed seeing the 1 or 2 wins that we'd crack for a season.

Have never forgotten those words he said and I didn't take any win for granted from 2003-2011.

Agree 100%

Never gonna make an impact in the big one.

Wonderful interview with Jack Roo on 360.
He has matured into an articulate young man and a very good leader at his club.
Enjoy your premiership, Jack, you deserve it. :clapping:
