Media conference at 4.00pm.

He's the sort of bloke you put next to Thompson in an administration / player welfare role.

Some say he was sacked, others say he resigned. Not sure which is correct yet!

AAP is reporting that Thomas was sacked.

EDIT: From AAP: While Butterss said the club had accepted Thomas' resignation after a board meeting earlier today, it was clear from the coach's comments at the media conference that he had resigned against his will.
"The fact is, this board represents the club and on behalf of the members has to make decisions in the best interests of the club and we have done that today," Butterss said.

if they sack their coach after an injury ridden year and still managing to finish where they did.......and we are keeping Bomber for finishing 10th with a full healthy side...whats the story with that!!!!

This is what The Age says:

Saints coach Thomas sacked

Peter Litras
September 12, 2006

St Kilda coach Grant Thomas will not coach the Saints next year after his fate was decided at a meeting with board members earlier today.
Thomas said he was disappointed in the decision and said that before the board meeting, he had expected to hold onto his position for next season.
''The guys (board) think firmly that the club needs to move in a different direction,'' Thomas told reporters.
''It's not necessarily a mutual agreement.''
''It came from left-field, I certainly wasn't expecting it.''

Club president Rod Butterss said Thomas' departure would allow the club the time it needed to find a new coach.
Earlier, he said the club and coach had reached a "mutual agreement" on replacing Thomas.
He highlighted strategy as one of the things the club had disagreed with Thomas on.
''We had our differences in terms of strategy and that helped our desision,'' he said.

Thought the bit I've put in bold interesting. Does it ring a bell down our way? I'd suggest they have a replacement in mind. Not sure who though.

I don't think it does ring much of a bell. St Kilda's strategy differences were inside the club, whereas Geelong has outside observers (media/supporters) saying we need different strategies.

This is interesting though...
imo, Saints and Cats are in similar positions... good lists that have underperformed drastically. Cats choose to keep coach (likely), and Saints dump theirs...
I guess we'll see this time next year which club has made the right decision!!

I think you'll find they are referring to onfield and selection strategies. There has been enormous criticism of Thomas just this week over his selection of unfit players last week [Hamil, Kositsche] and the fact he was outcoached by Daniher in the last half last weekend. And regularly throughout the year there has been criticism of his game day coaching expertise. Nah, it's his lack of coaching nous that has cost him. Certainly rings a bell with me.

This may make the Cats even less keen to sack Thompson. They could enter the market for a new coach and not get the man they are after, whoever that is.

Having said that I don't even know if they are going to sack Thompson.

Thomas is a crap coach, has always been a crap coach and has always been known as being a crap coach. He only had the job for so long because of his mates. Had a very talented and frittered away their opportunities.

I don't know that he bares comparison with Thompson though, even though Thompson has some pretty major deficiencies.

The board of St. Kilda had there fingers on the pulse.
They had analysed their team, coaching staff etc
They therefore where in a position to act and steady the team

Why is it that Geelong can not do the same?
If Thompson is coach or not should already be decided. This is a major issue. How can the club look ahead if this is not resolved

Existing players have choosen sides
Possible recruits would be concerned by the unstable environment
Supporters are confused
etc etc

Geelong do something? Your actions prove that you__
DO NOT HAVE THE FINGER ON THE PULSE

Just because Bomber hasn't been sacked yet does not mean the board does npot have 'their finger on the pulse'. Cook is conducting an in-depth review which is the best way to go. Rash decisions should not be made.

Once the review has been completed then decisions can be made based upon the findings. How other clubs decide the fate of their coach is irellevant, let the board take their time and make the right decisions.

Yes you are right.
Just leaves a festering mess. That takes a long while to heal.
THEY NEED TO ACT.

Sounds more like they had their fingers firmly planted around Thomas' jugular, and they were squeezing. I agree with Jim Boy's assessment of Thomas' coaching abilities, but it was revealed tonight that the Saints were interviewing Longmire the same time they were sacking Thomas.

As for steadying the team, it sounds like the players were all firmly behind Thomas, and I heard a whisper that Gehrig, Hamill and Harvey might all retire now that Thomas is gone. How is that stabilising the team? Furthermore, the assistant coaches are unsure how safe their positions are at the moment.

At least with Geelong's review, everyone involved with the football department know that their position is under review. I'd prefer Geelong's approach than St. Kilda's any day.

Their timing was strange - they made this decision while they were still in the finals. There are some who say we need to be pro-active like St Kilda - get Tim Watson, sack him, talk Blighty into coaching when he's clearly disinterested but offer too much money to ignore, and sack him, appoint their football manager (or whatever he was) as coach, and sack him.

The Geelong board are simply waiting for the best time to release their decision that they back Bomber for the remainder of his contract. Stability, mediocrity, avoid rocking the boat (despite the fact that it is leaking).
Grant Thomas has just said that he did not see the decision to sack him coming - that is at odds with remarks he made off air during the lead-up to the finals. His sacking and the clever playing out of the martyr role is beyond Bomber.
The nasty man turns into a "saint" on being sacked - wily old fox ( not Lindsay). Geelong fear that the nice man may well turn into a vengeful, nasty one.
Do nothing, sit on our hands etc
And the band plays on ........
