Saints coach Thomas sacked
Peter Litras
September 12, 2006
St Kilda coach Grant Thomas will not coach the Saints next year after his fate was decided at a meeting with board members earlier today.
Thomas said he was disappointed in the decision and said that before the board meeting, he had expected to hold onto his position for next season.
''The guys (board) think firmly that the club needs to move in a different direction,'' Thomas told reporters.
''It's not necessarily a mutual agreement.''
''It came from left-field, I certainly wasn't expecting it.''
Club president Rod Butterss said Thomas' departure would allow the club the time it needed to find a new coach.
Earlier, he said the club and coach had reached a "mutual agreement" on replacing Thomas.
He highlighted strategy as one of the things the club had disagreed with Thomas on.
''We had our differences in terms of strategy and that helped our desision,'' he said.

Thought the bit I've put in bold interesting. Does it ring a bell down our way? I'd suggest they have a replacement in mind. Not sure who though.
I think you'll find they are referring to onfield and selection strategies. There has been enormous criticism of Thomas just this week over his selection of unfit players last week [Hamil, Kositsche] and the fact he was outcoached by Daniher in the last half last weekend. And regularly throughout the year there has been criticism of his game day coaching expertise. Nah, it's his lack of coaching nous that has cost him. Certainly rings a bell with me.tima said:I don't think it does ring much of a bell. St Kilda's strategy differences were inside the club, whereas Geelong has outside observers (media/supporters) saying we need different strategies.

They had analysed their team, coaching staff etc
They therefore where in a position to act and steady the team
Why is it that Geelong can not do the same?
If Thompson is coach or not should already be decided. This is a major issue. How can the club look ahead if this is not resolved
Existing players have choosen sides
Possible recruits would be concerned by the unstable environment
Supporters are confused
etc etc
Geelong do something? Your actions prove that you__
DO NOT HAVE THE FINGER ON THE PULSE

We could be too late though. No official contact has been made by the Cats with Longmire, but he will be considered for the head role should Thompson not survive.

winty said:Sounds more like they had their fingers firmly planted around Thomas' jugular, and they were squeezing. I agree with Jim Boy's assessment of Thomas' coaching abilities, but it was revealed tonight that the Saints were interviewing Longmire the same time they were sacking Thomas.
As for steadying the team, it sounds like the players were all firmly behind Thomas, and I heard a whisper that Gehrig, Hamill and Harvey might all retire now that Thomas is gone. How is that stabilising the team? Furthermore, the assistant coaches are unsure how safe their positions are at the moment.
At least with Geelong's review, everyone involved with the football department know that their position is under review. I'd prefer Geelong's approach than St. Kilda's any day.

Having said that I don't even know if they are going to sack Thompson.
