I was watching the round 22 West Coast vs Essendon game today and after seeing this game again i would have to say that i rate Scott Lucas' last quarter as the best i have ever seen by a Dons player. I have seen Lloydy, Jimi and Watson absolutely dominate Qtrs but i don't think any has been better than Scotty's effort. His hands were so strong, his kicking for goal was out of this world and the importance of his effort can not be described. The boys were getting flogged and it looked like Hird And Sheeds were going to go out on a real sour note but Lucas rose to the occasion and gave Hirdy the one more memory that he asked for.

During the last quarter Glen Jakovich commented that Lucas' last quarter was the best he had ever seen by a player (from any club)

What do you guys think?

Been plenty over the years.

Hird's last quarter in the '04 game against the Weagles is a good place to start.

I was actually going to name my top 3 and that would have been second for sure. Can't believe he was robbed of the votes that game, let's not mention the fact it was only a few days after the umpires episode.:):thumbsu:

Besides the obvious 2 already mentioned, Lloydie's first quarter effort against the Swans at the dome in round 1 2006 was pretty special. Led Leo Barry on an absolute merry dance. I think he kicked 5? might have been 6.

Pretty sure he kicked 6. :thumbsu:

Leo is Loyds bitch the only way Sydney can stop Lloyd is when they triple team him.

Lloydy would have quite a few if we were to compose a list.

The guy is a freak!

I know it's a finals series best forgotten, but Mercuri's second quarter against the Swans in 99 was one of the best I've seen. Just dominated, pretty much had BOG locked away by halftime. Didn't come back on due to a knock though from memory

I was in Europe in 1999 so missed the whole season but i heard Mercs dominated.

Didn't know about the Sydney final though. :thumbsu:

When Moorcroft took mark of the year against the Dogs wasn't that pretty much a 1qtr episode where Lloyd was dragged out of the 50? If so that would have to rate think he finished with 5-6 and had the Coleman medalist moved up the field to make space for him.

Absolutely killed it, probably the best game (or half) he played all season, and that was when he came runner up in the Brownlow.

If you missed that year it definitely wouldn't hurt watching replays just for Mercuri alone. The year that he became one of my all time favourites.

His first quarter against the Bulldogs in 2003 when he overtook Madden's record was pretty special too.

I wonder what his qtr by qtr breakdown was the day he kicked 13 against Sydney. I was at the game but can't recall how many he kicked in each qtr, anyone know?

Some good memories here..

another favourite was Boris Bewicks come back match for the centenary match against Geelong in '96.. Some brilliant goals and classic cheeky Bewick ...

Kicked 9 for the match .. two in two minutes at the start of the second (also the quarter Longy done his knee kicking for goal) but it was his 5 in the last effort that won us the game ... Brilliant come back after a year out of the game.. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Brilliant game, i have a '96 game by game highlights video, and always look forward to watching that night against Geelong. I think it was his 7th where he spun 2 guys out on the boundary and snapped it from the boundary. Close to the best goal i've ever seen. But of recent, the same ones that have been named already, Lucas last year, Lloydy 2006 that was brilliant, and hirdy 04 what a superstar.

The only problem with nominating Lucas' performance is how much Hirdy did to get it down to him so often.

They were both amazing!

You really think Hirdy was amazing in that last quarter?

He played alongside Lucas in the forward line and was pretty well held.

I think from memory he might have hit Lucas once in the last quarter with a rushed kick but thats about it.

Hirds role in that last quarter was basically to pat him on the back after every goal, after each effort Hirdies grin kept getting wider and wider.

I would say that Lucas rose to the occasion for his mate.

Cheers.

You might be right. For some reason I remembered him being everywhere in the last... Maybe it was earlier in the game.

Yeah he was all over the place earlier in the game but i think he went off with an injury in the third so they put him in the forward line in the last quarter. He still threw his body around in typical Hird fasion though! :thumbsu:

A lot of good nominations so far, personally,

1 Hird V Eagles '04
2 Lloyd v Dogs '03

I bit of a left field one was Dyson in the last Qtr v the Lions in '06. Probably not the best qtr ever but he was everywhere, kicking good goals, got 10 or 11 touches as well, really lit the place up.

Hopefully we can get him to reproduce it soon

A lot of great nominations so far, glad Bewick vs Geel '96 & Moorcroft Dogs '01 have been mentioned. Both were sensational, and provided so many more highlights than the obvious (Bewick's snap & Moorcroft's greatest mark ever). Amazing to think that Lloyd and Lucas were moved up the ground for Moorcroft, and Brad Johnson was forced back on to him, to then concede 3 goals in about 5 minutes anyway.

The other that came immediately to mind was Longy's last quarter vs Adelaide in 2000. Kicked 6 goals for the day, and I'm pretty sure at least 5 were in the last.

Yeah that was crazy, the only game where a team (besides Rnd 21) looked even close to beating us, Ricciuto was on fire. Then Longy came to town and picked up a lazy 5 in five minutes.

Didn't get a vote though.

Beat me to it ! Moorcroft had his own ball that night.

He didn't touch it once in the remaining 3 quarters....

In fact his career went downhill after that mark.

He was decent in the first quarter kicking one or two, but didn't have a huge impact after half time..... although we were already 45 points up and he looked pretty sore after the impact of hitting the ground so I think thats understandable.

He had one more big game against Collingwood the following season when he kicked 5, but generally did struggle after the Dogs game. Didn't he chip a fragment of his hip when he landed, and have it floating around inside of him for the rest of his career?
