Hi All,

Apologies if this has been done already and also for encompassing what should be two different discussions into one. Have been out & just returned home, so missed the live draft and was just updating myself on who got picked & who didn't.

Just curious, but with us picking up Greg Broughton with our last pick is it a case of having to either upgrade or delist a rookie after 2 years, whereby in the event of delisting him that club still retains all rights to pick that player back up without anybody taking him with a prior pick? Reason for asking is, we passed on the 5th round selection but picked Broughton back up with our 6th selection.

Also, did anybody notice that Daniel Chick entered the draft? Was it a case of him seriously thinking somebody would pick him up who thought they were in premiership mode ie; Collingwood, or was it a case of he just can't let go of the past?

Its the new way of doing things to give credit to the Rookies for being elevated, they get their name read out on the "big day". Nothing to do with having to upgrade/delist.

If a player enters the draft, they are registered for 3 years afaik.

Thanks Bradesman. I need to find a charter or book on all of these new AFL regulations & draft policies. Damn confusing at times

Chick has nominated for the draft every single year since he was delisted. The general rule is that unless a player has seriously retired from all forms of football, they will nominate for the draft. I guarantee Chick was not holding his breath

I was talking to a guy last week whose son nominated in 07 and Brades is right (for once ;)), once you nominate for the draft you are automatically registered for 3 years. So Chick's name would just be still there from when he applied after the eagles dumped him.

That's interesting, didn't know that. That means we can take Russell Robertson in 2011 just as our premiership window opens and we need to top up :p.

Does this apply to rookie picks as well?

If so, then when we promised Foster that we'd rookie list him if he wasn't picked up, did we mean this year? Or next years' compromised draft?

I didnt think we promised to re-draft Foster. I took it as more of a "if ur still available, we will look at you just like any other player". I dont really think well be picking him up again.

i agree, i dont think anything was set in stone. and if we have the option of getting mitch thorp as a rookie or panos/hutchings etc we will go for them rather than fossie

Not only should we forget about picking up Foster again, we should take the time to DeList Brock and Murphy before the cut off period. Distasteful though it sounds lets be honest, they are going to be doing nothing for the team going forward.

What we should be doing is looking at Key Position and Ruck prospects and taking the best possible players. West Australian and with great attitudes. The Rookie list has been good for Freo lately and we need to make room.

hard for both murphy and brock to be delisted given that they are under contract. murphy i would pay out without hesitation. brock........ hmmm i still wouldnt mind to see get one more year. who knows... in reality though i cant see us delisting either

Does not mean that it cant or shouldnt happen. I admit that it is poor form and should have happened earlier so that they could have had a chance being drafted but seriously, it is time to move out the 'Dead Wood!' and get in some fresh blood that does not get injured all the time or has some ticker and a brain!

There is room in the salary cap and we would be getting in rookies as a replacement. I believe that a couple of KP Forwards/Backs and Ruck option is vital on top of the best available player.

I'm with Dockerland1.

Delist them, with the plan of mature age rookie listing them, that way we aren't paying them for nothing, and if they do offer the club something, (which the club must think they do) then we can have them as back up for injuries.

That would give us 2 more picks in the PSD (to use on Panos/Hutchins/whoever), so we effectively get first crack at the rookie's, and not have to wait for the Gold Coast getting the 1st 5 picks.

Seems like common sense to me, slightly distasteful, but both boys wouldn't lose out $$$ wise, would still be on our list (unless someone else rookie'd them????) and would be good tactics to draft 2 better quality kids to the club.

I dont think you can draft kids in the PSD who havent been on an AFL list before. SO by delisting Murph and BoB, and rookie listing them, wed be wasting 2 picks in this draft?

You can, Liam Jurrah being the prime example. But its not worth it, it was a shallow enough draft as it is.

I think Jurrah might be the only example. From memory there where special circumstances surrounding it, and an application had to be made to the AFL in order for it to happen.

I cant remember the full story about it, but i wouldnt hold my breath waiting for it to happen again.

Sometimes a quick search can save some blushes.... not so special circumstances after all.

GEELONG Falcon Joe Dare and Northern Knight Dylan Grimes will be among the leading contenders in the NAB AFL Pre-Season/Rookie Drafts, after they were surprisingly overlooked in Thursday night's NAB AFL Draft.

And if it's still considered such a shallow draft, I'd rather be drafting 2 players in the top 12 in the PSD followed by McPhee. Then we re-rookie Murphy/Thornton (Rookie draft pick 8) BOB (24).

Seems a much better option to only taking McPhee in the PSD. Then picking rookie's with 8 and pick 24(-ish) in the rookie draft.

Chicky's not holding his breath - last seen driving crane's on Barrow island - hope he doesn't get to many random tests........:)
