Well Im not a complete dumby when it comes to Gridiron I watch the sport weekly as a Jets fan.

But I do have some trouble understanding some of the positions and now im playing for a club id like to know a bit for about the position that im going to play.

Tonight was my first training sesh for the club, and Coach said I'd be an ideal center for the team. I do know a few of the positions like QB, WR and RB etc but not much about the center.

I know ill be snapping the ball etc what what will it take for me to play as a decent center, and any tips that would help.

Body strength, powerful upper body and legs enabling you to hold off defensive linemen and also being able to push through them and get to the second level (Line backers) on running plays. Also, a good understanding with the QB is important.

Mind if I ask where you play? I thought Gridiron season was over here.

A couple of my mates played for the Oilers back in the day, when they were playing games at the old Thebarton Oval. I don't know if it is still a record but one of my mates set the record for an interception return when he ran one back from the 1 yard line for a 99 yard TD return.

And then one play later he dislocated two fingers and we had to take him to emergency. Was an interesting day.:p

The trouble with Gridiron on the TV is they only focus on the ball. All the ex-players commentating agree 'The game is won at the line of scrimmage'. It's a war there, and tiny adjustments can make a big difference - but us TV viewers don't appreciate it.

Hopefully you get a good coach who can tell you all about it. I suspect if you haven't played the game at a decent level (and hardly any of us have), - not a clue.

All of that, and I'd throw in great footwork as well.

Yeah i've actually been working on my footwork at training because my feet have always naturally pointed outwards, so its a difficult transition to make to face forward so I can keep my balance.

I've played centre, here in Victoria. Get over it, as quick as you can, that the qb will have his hand on you private parts, pretty much anyway. Listen very carefully to the qb when he's making the count. What I mean is, if the play is going to start on "hut", as soon as the qb started the "h", I launched it.

If you're listening carefully you will be able to make the distincton "hu" "uh" and "t". By the time he says the "t' in "hut", the ball should be in the qb's hand. Also, be aware that the guards beside you, maybe even the tackles, are watching the ball, all of you are going to be wound up, so make sure your arm and hands are still because, at the slightest glitch, the guards may false start thinking you were going to snap it.

Typically, especially against a four man line, you're usually helping one of the guards (or they're helping you), or you maybe assigned to, depending on the play, on the middle linebacker. If there's a nose tackle, whoever is lowest, wins. But, I suspect, your coaches have already told you that.
