What are peoples thoughts on Grigg for next season?

I personally see him as a guy who might really improve with a full pre-season and I'm hoping he will be in the 22 in round 1. Opposed to a number of other players he has some qualities which could see him become elite. Could be our Nigel Lappin. Very similar players in that they are silky, have a relaxed kicking style, are very tall and play wing/half back. I think he will start his career on a half back flank and work his way into the midfield as he gets older.

While some have criticized him, for me he showed more in his last couple of AFL games this season than Russell has in his career so far. Almost cracked 20 possessions in the Melbourne game and looked quite dangerous.

I've heard that he was really impressive in his 1st couple of VFL games before he got injured. I'd be really keen to hear from anyone who was there what their impressions were of him?

So what do people think? Could he step up and be the NAB rising star winner in 08?

Great kid, and I think he could turn out to be a pretty good player for the Carlton Footy Club. Not so sure he could get the NRS, but, like Gilly said, he might be one that will benefit from having Judd around the club more than others. Really does take the pressure off him, and he could play a pretty offensive game next year.

i doubt it, he is going to struggle to get a regular game with the midfield we have!

If has a big pre-season he could make the 22.

The certainties fore me are: H.Scotland, S.O'hAilpin, J.Waite, A.Walker, K.Simpson, A.Carrazzo, B.Gibbs, M.Murphy, R.Houlihan, E.Betts, B.Fisher, B.Fevola, C.Judd, B.Thornton, N.Stevens

That's 15, meaning 7 places are up for grabs. I suspect 2 will go to ruckman, 1-2 will go to talls which leaves 3-4 places for runners. Bentick, Hadley, Jackson, Blackwell, Anderson, Hadley, Grigg and Russell will be the ones fighting for these 3-4 positions come round one.

My tips are Hadley, Grigg and Jackson to get the 3 spots in round 1.

Agree 100%

Grigg for me has to improve on 3 aspects:

1. hitting targets by foot
2. winning more contested footy
3. work harder whe the ball has been turned over

Shows a lot of promise I would be happy with a nomination let alone him winning the NRS.

Good future ahead.:thumbsu:

I rate Grigg extremely highly. I think he could actually be one of the best of the 2006 draft in fact. Tall midfielder, with brilliant skills and serious leg speed. A huge penetrating left foot kick, The other thing is attitude. On field he has a little bit of the Fev-type arrogance, and has the talent to back it up. Looks fiercely determined to succeed, and with Judd presence I think his development will skyrocket. Star potential without question. :)

So do I Parrot, from the first game I watched him play, i seen something. When he had the ball in the backline just sitting there looking for an option to kick to, clearly ignoring Pagan's game plan of just kicking it long, showed alot even though he got run down. I like players who try to take the game on and are not scared to do something different, unlike Russell.

He also has the body shape, I think he would be able to break through tackles next year. So to answer the original question. Yes he can win the NRS, he definately has the potential.

I've got high hopes for him, but I think he'll struggle to get game time next year. We've got three midfielders:
Simpson
Carrazzo
Hadley
Walker
Scotland
Houlihan
Murphy
Stevens
Judd
Jackson
Gibbs
Betts
who would all at the moment be in the 22 ahead of him, with
Russel
Bentick
and Blackwell
being given opportunities to show if they're up to it.

I'd expect Grigg to get games towards the end of the season depending on form/injury, but personally, given the midfield depth we've acquired, I think he'll be spending some time in the reserves.

Leigh Matthews says you need need at least 17 blokes in your 22 capable of going through the midefield. I think you will find that Grigg will play most weeks.

could he be unleashed in the foward line on the half forward flank?
we should take advantge of his size and skills and im sure he would get under the gards of many clubs playing on the 4ward Flank

Not sure about NRS award but am a massive fan of this fella. Hes Kade Simpson on steroids which would point to a big year for this guy in 08

Rightio, so who from Bower, Fev, Waite, Fisher, Thorton, possibly Hartlett, O'hAilpin are gonna miss out to make room for the 17 mids?

FWIW, I think we'll line up like this next year:
B:Bower S O'hAilpin Jamison
HB:Scotland Thornton Walker
C:Simpson Carrazzo Hadley
HF:Houlihan Waite Murphy
F:Betts Fevola Fisher
R:Cloke Judd Stevens

I:Hampson Jackson Gibbs Hartlett/Russel

with Grigg as one of the emergencies.

i love that comparison

It's how I look at Grigg - compare him to Simpson: Very left sided, Looked like he didint belong in his first couple of games. Remember simpson didnt touch the ball in his first couple of games. Grigg looks bigger stronger and faster than simpson is now. He should be going head to head with Jackson next year as most improved
