Hey Tigerheads, I haven't heard much on Grigg this preseason. What position do you think he is best suited to in 2012 and beyond? He played a bit everywhere this year wing, back, forward but never really made a position his own. Besides his first 6 rounds, he was a bit disappointing imo.

I think he should be used as a tagger - If not he should be used as a forward flanker... He is a good size and has better skills then Jackson. His kicking is too "up and under" coming out of the backline and he doesn't have the balance or awareness of your Cotchin's, Foley's, Tuck's and Martin's to play inside. He moves well, is good is space, and good size which are three good characteristics for a half forward flanker

Thoughts?

*To clarrify I am talking about our flanker Grigg, not our unearthed superstar ruckman Griggs

In a good side he'd be a depth player.
He's probably best 22 now, but I would hope he gets edged out sooner rather than later.

I might be in the minority, but I don't rate him that highly and if it were up to me he'd be playing at Coburg in 2012 as a handy back up. There are others I'd have in before him in the midfield rotations.

he was recruited as an inside mid from memory. if he can't do that, im not sure if there is a spot for him. needs to improve his kicking. i guess tagger could work.

He is not even close to being an inside mid and was not recruited as one. He is as outside as they come. Needs to raise the bar this year.

The only thing Grigg has got going for him at the moment is that he is 190cm and has a balance of strength and running ability (neither of which are outstanding).
He has got alot of improving to do, but gees he just looked to lack confidence at all times last year.

Grigg has got an emormous tank and certainly can find the footy. His hand ball is exceptional but his kicking is very Tuck like. He does tend to just bomb away at times.

The funny thing is that the coaching staff are obvviously aware of this because he does tend to bomb away and get the ball very quickly into the forward line putting pressure on the opposition back line.

I think they have drilled this into him to make the best out of a bad situation with his kicking.

Does anyone know of a player that has dramatically improved his kicking over a summer because that is what needs to happen? Maybe Sam Mitchell , I know he was a very poor kick when he started I suppose I cam asking can his kicking improve?

Jobe Watson is a great example. I think it needs to be a huge year for Shaun. Was extremely lucky not to be dropped towards the second half of the year.

Great example Ize . There is hope for him. He did get punted back for one game to Coburg but it should of been more.

Pretty sure his only absence was through injury last year, and came straight back after one week. Stand to be corrected though. He was a lucky duck either way.

shows how much i know haha.

i knew he wasnt great at it, but thats why i thought we recruited him.

an outside player who just slams it on the boot. recepie for disaster

he is basically useless then. the only thing he has going for him is his size.

not a great kick. slow.

hopefully he can turn it around

I don't think that Grigg will last very long in our best 22, I am pretty sure that they brought him in to replace Tuck, but I believe that the fact that Tuck is simply too good and hard-working has finally hit the match committee and coaching staff. Once Tuck has retired, we'll have an immediate replacement in Arnot, Helbig or even Ellis.

There are around 10 midfielders in the best 22 in modern day football.
This will hopefully be our best 10 in near times.
Cotchin
Martin
Deledio
Conca
Foley
Edwards
Jackson
One of Helbig/Arnot
Two of Maric/O'Hanlon/Nahas (Pinch hit mid)

Ellis has been touted as being a future mid.....

Whilst I agree that Ellis could be a midfielder. He was drafted to release Deledio in to the midfield, and it may come to be that Ellis' class down back is imperative to our side like Deledio in 2010 and parts of 2011. I believe our midfield has enough class in the in and under players whilst our backline is deficient in that area of skill.

Best case scenario is that Dea, Verrier or Webberley comes on and replaces Ellis, thus placing him in an already amazing midfield. He may even replace Deledio again to put him in a forward position.

Dont know if we will win this trade with Carlton.

Andy looked like a deer in headlights in his only Carlton outing but if he can put that injury behind him then he may go OK given he played some good games for Preston.

I didnt warm to Grigg last year and feel as if he is limited from here on with little upside.

Collins seems more an unknown who could go either way.

We were lead to believe both grigg and Houli were recruited as midfielders , when played there for the first few rounds last season Grugg quite clearly overshadowed Houli , yet plenty have Grigg struggling to get a game and Houli planted on a wing in 2012 best 22 sides .
Outside mid/wing, with so many rebounding defenders, IMO , is now one of the hardest spots to play , Newman and Grigg have appeared the most capable within the role, and I hope they both spend most of the season there , if Grigg , like most in our side , can add some blocking / shepparding to his game, he will be a good player.

I tihnk were being a bit harsh on Grigg ,let's not forget still is young and has time on his side.Last season was the first he played alot of games in his afl career.Agree his kicking has to improve ,but it's not terrible and can be fixed.I also think his workrate needs to improve to.

Whenever Grigg has the footy I'm always immediately very concerned.
He definitely knows how to get the thing but his kicking is absolutely deplorable and too often it seems they're "here, it's your problem now" kicks. As a player at the highest level he often seems confused, has zero creativity and to me he looks quite slow. He's a fairly big bloke that for whatever reason seems reluctant to impose himself on the contest. I dunno if it's a confidence issue but he would obviously want to address his deficiencies and I wish him luck because we want everyone on our list to improve this season. He's gotta pull his finger out from day 1 this year or it won't be yellow and black it'll be an indefinite spell in the blue and red.

Soo harsh people.

First year at the club, new game plan etc and yet he played some very good games. The draw with StKilda comes to mind and was an excellent performance IMO. Yes he made some mistakes but he killed it in the centre, ran hard, won clearances and kicked goals.

I think he will be a good player for us and will find some more consistency this season.

Very rarely do new recruits from another club come straight in and dominate unless they are stars. They usually take atleast 2 years.

Grigg has excellent speed over 20 m and good endurance. He also has a physique where he could put a lot of muscle on. His kicking is his deficiency but it's not as bad as some believe. Besides his kicking his defensive game and toughness need to be improved. I would love to see Grigg developed as that 3rd tall defender competing with Grimes.

By playing this position week in and week out he should be able to improve his defensive skills as well as giving Richmond another tall defender option with genuine speed.

Yeah fair enough, I think I'm ranting about his kicking because he was once at Carltank and I'm struggling to shake that off (I was at the GF in '82). He doesn't need the likes of me, who was an awful footballer, providing him with career guidance.

He's not a bad kick. He's a good short kick. His long kicks are floaters though. He's very good at kicking to a lead in the forwardline.

which was highlighted by his high ranking in goal assists in 2010.

shocking kick for goal, though, from what we saw last year.
