Guerra delisted

As reported here . Wonder what will become of him now ... he's showed so much ability in glimpses on the big stage but seems to unravel. His off field behaviour doesn't help.

Couldn't see Choco taking him back.

My this is a popular topic! I'm sure one of our diligent mods will roll them together. ;)

(PS couldn't you guys sleep in on Saturday either? :p )

We could do a lot worse than get The Guru back at Alberton.
He might be a loose cannon in some respects, but he is exactly the sort of player we are short of IMO.
An aggressive, hard at it in and under player who never backs out of a contest and puts the fear of Bejesus into the opposition. Not dissimilar to Choppy.
Personally i would have been happy for us to do a trade with St Kilda to get Brent back and to give them Salopek who in my opionion is far too soft.
Interesting to see what happens out of this.

Well no way I'd give Sala up for him but Brent would certainly add that hard hitting aspect to our play if we could be confident he was going to apply himself to football. Great kick on him too. As he's delisted we wouldn't have to trade. Would have to be a late acquisition in the PSD IMO. Maybe offer him a contract structured something like the deal we offered to Choppy but with less money involved?

Naaaah. If we got rid of him in the first place for character reasons (he's not Choco's preferred type, in any case), why would we want him back. He's been good enough, but hasn't shown anything special at St Kilda.

Yes, we desperately need toughness. But, please, not toughness with baggage. We've been there at least twice before. We can grow our own. Unless by chance Chrissie Johnson becomes available? :D

If he gets picked up again, he has to bring this over....

I agree, Salopek isn't soft or he wouldn't be playing AFL footy. And Guerra is ********!

Bring back Brent!

If he's willing to shape up (lets face it, we all knew St Kilda was the last place to send him to reform his habits), there's no doubt he has a lot of the attributes we're desperate for.

Thanks for the feedback and compliments.
You will see who has the last laugh when Salopek fails to come up again. Nick Stevens revisited.

Hey!!!

Why is this thread getting more posts than mine about Guerra? :( :D

Mods, can we get all IPs from Northern Territory ISPs banned? Thanks.

Seems Port might be interested ... but is Guerra? This story was found here

Forewarned by silence of the Saints
By Stephen Rielly
October 31, 2005

IT WASN'T what Brent Guerra was hearing about his future at St Kilda that alerted him to his departure from Moorabbin but the opposite, what he had not heard.

"Everything had been a bit quiet on a new deal and after a while I figured the silence wasn't good," Guerra said yesterday.

So when he met St Kilda coach Grant Thomas last Friday, he was disappointed but not surprised to be told that because the club had decided to retain all of its senior players, the likes of Andrew Thompson, Justin Peckett and Stephen Powell, he was being released after two seasons and 31 matches.

"That was sort of it. There wasn't much more of an explanation," Guerra said. "Thommo thanked me and wished me all the best and said he thought a few clubs had interest in me, which left me with some hope."

Even so, Guerra felt the need to get away for the weekend, to consider, as he put it, "starting over for a third time".

He headed to the Lake Eildon district along with one of his closest friends in the game, Nick Stevens, to analyse the prospects that a 23-year-old equipped with 96 games of experience and a precise left foot might have.

He and Stevens met as teenagers at Port Adelaide and after four years together there returned to Victoria for the same reason, at the same time, trade week 2003. Stevens has since played 42 games for Carlton and established himself as the Blues' best player. It crossed Guerra's mind in the 48 hours after his firing that it would be a fine thing if his pal enjoyed as much influence over Carlton off the field as he does on it.

"I've been speaking with him about it, don't worry about that," Guerra admitted, before quickly establishing the point that for the chance to keep playing he is prepared, as he was as a 17-year-old draftee six years ago, to again venture interstate.

Interestingly, Guerra heard from Thomas that Port raised his name in trade discussions three weeks ago although the Port connection of more appeal is with Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson, who first coached Guerra at Central District in the SANFL before working with him when an assistant coach at Alberton in 2003.

"If I have to go interstate to play I'll go interstate. I would prefer to remain in Melbourne but I'll go anywhere to play. All I've really got is footy," he said. "I'll nominate for both drafts. I desperately want to keep playing footy."

Whether he does is unlikely to be known before the national draft on November 26, unless a club is prepared to make Guerra an offer before he nominates that would redirect his future through the pre-season draft in December.

Between now and then, though, he has another commitment to fulfil — a 10-day holiday with his girlfriend in Singapore that is unlikely to be as relaxed or football-free as either intended.

"I won't be going anywhere without my phone. I'll have it with me everywhere just in case there's some news," Guerra said.

I wasn't happy when Guerra left Port so I would be very happy to have him back.

He is about to to enter the prime of his career age wise and with almost a 100 games experience and a hard approach to the game is exacltly what I think we need.

Bring back Brent!!

I was disappointed when Guerra left. I was still hopeful he could straighten out the well known off-field sideshows. That doesn't seem to have happened.

At this point with Choco unable to fix him once, a new club not doing so, I don't fancy our chances this time around. A pity as he could be a good solid starting 18 footballer - not a champion by any stretch, but an 'automatic' selection. The only way I'd countenance Port chasing him is if he's willing to sign a tight 'code of conduct' agreement, with penalties for breaches. If he's really serious that football is his life he'd sign it for another chance.

If you needed a guy to concentrate on his on-field and reduce the off-field debauchery, St Kilda is not the club to do it.

As for performance contract, its tough to organise now. If it was a trade, no problem, but now he just nominates a salary and either he gets it or not. The only thing we could offer is benefits for good behaviour, not penalties.

I am a firm believer in the saying that you cannot go back, Guerra was sent packing I hope he stays firmly in Victoria. His off field problems are legion, good riddance. For FFS he even turned up at St Kildas training smelling of booze. Let's please leave well enough alone.

The club shouldn't bother IMO.

He's a party boy who doesn't learn from his mistakes. Not worth giving him another go for 2 or 3 good games a year.

Oh, and besides, one of his closest friends is Nick Stevens :p

I guess you would find the interest by Richmond supporters amusing then ... ;)
