Brilliant topic Wally, anything that starts a discussion about guitars has to be good.

Favourite solos - I started a "best solos" topic a month or so ago and to save typing (and thinking) I will dredge it up Dan-style if I can find it.

Favourite riffs - (in no order, and I will try not to list like a hundred)

Manowar - too many to mention, but Blood of the Kings in particular
Deep Purple (Ritchie Blackmore)- Mistreated, Burn, You Fool No One, Wring That Neck, Hey Joe intro, Pictures of Home, The Mule, Smoke on the Water
Rainbow (Ritchie Blackmore) - Tarot Woman, Kill the King, Eyes of the World, Difficult to Cure (Beethoven's Ninth), Wolf to the Moon, Hall of the Mountain King, Still I'm Sad
Van Halen (Eddie VH) - Fools, Panama, Ain't Talkin' Bout Love, Poundcake
Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page) - Travelling Riverside Blues & Kashmir stand out but there's probably 50 more
UFO (Michael Schenker) - Doctor Doctor, Lights Out, Mother Mary, Rock Bottom, Only You Can Rock Me, Electric Phase, the list is endless really
Hammerfall - Stone Cold
Arch Enemy - Silverwing
Gary Moore - Still Got The Blues
Anthrax - In My World, Medusa, Fueled
Iron Maiden - Phantom of the Opera, Wasted Years, Futureal, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, The Prisoner, Drifter (bass riff)
Scorpions - Can't Live Without You, Hell Cat, Robot Man, Catch Your Train, Sails of Charon

Probably favourite riff of all is Scorpions - Sails of Charon or Deep Purple - You Fool No One. Somrthing tells me I've left a lot out...

Some great stuff there Darky, great to see a fellow headbanger reply.
I too could rattle off hundreds of my 'favorites'. I'm a huge Blackmore fan, just about everything he's done is brilliant. Saw Deep Purple back in '84 on the 'Perfect Strangers' tour.
I also saw 'em when they toured here in '99, (awesome show) and the 'new' guy (Steve Morse) is no slouch either. What's the loudest gig you've attended? I saw Motorhead at the Festival Hall back in the early '80's and it was the loudest. Rory Gallagher (have ya heard of him?, blues guitarist and a great player)at the Palais in '91 was pretty rowdy too.

I'm also heavily into blues and for pure 'musicianship' Buddy Guy at the Old Greek Theatre in Richmond was the best live performance i've seen from a guitarist.
Buddy's in his 60's now and i've seen him 3 times and he's blown the crowd away every time.
What's the best gig you've seen? Like i said, i have about a hundred 'best' gigs.

Goin' to AC/DC on Sunday night, and The Celibate Rifles are playing at The Cornish Arms next month. Should be great!
Cheers.

Been playing almost 4 years, couple of years on bass before that but it got boring, also dabbled with keyboards when I was younger

Celibate Rifles-Jesus on TV(Kent steedman??)

Sonic Youth-Teenage Riot(thurston moore)

The Birthday Party-Dead Joe(Rowland
howard/mick Harvey)

Died Pretty-Winterland(Brett Myers-He once told me that his dad played for St Kilda)

I have to go But Ill think about it and come up with some more this is a great topic

Jod, been playing for 14 years - never overly seriously so I'm a bit of a hack - but I can play "Babe, I'm going to leave you" by Zep so I suppose I'm not completely ******ed.

Riffs that spring to mind:

"Babe I'm going to leave you"
"Voodoo Child"
"Sympathy for the devil" solo lightening
the cool riff in "1979"
"Karen" (gobetweens - simple but very effective)
"Waiting for my man"
"In the ghetto" - love that guitar
"Country Honk"
"Communication breakdown"

etc etc etc

localyokel,
Speaking of The Celibate Rifles, they're playing The Cornish Arms in Brunswick next month. Gotta check 'em out, they're a great band! The song you mentioned 'Jesus on TV' , not familiar with it. What album is it on?

where's wally?

A few more...

'Bad Boy For Love' Rose Tatoo/Pete Wells, o.k. it's not very scientific, but i really like the slide thing over the top of their gritty sounding rythm section.

' Nights In Venice' ( Actually the entire '(I'm) Stranded album, bloody classic!) The Saints/Ed Kuepper.

'How Many More Times' Jimmy Page/Led Zeppelin

'Cold Shot' Stevie Ray Vaughan.

'Voodoo Chile' ( the 15 minute blues version)
Jimi Hendrix

'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' Tony Iommi/Black Sabbath

'Man On The Silver Mountain' Ritchie Blackmore/Rainbow

'I'm Goin' Home' Alvin Lee/Ten Years After

'Crash Course In Brain Surgery' Tony Bourge/Budgie

'Free Speech For The Dumb' Kirk Hammett/Metallica

'N.S.U.' Eric Clapton/Cream

'Presence Of The Lord' Eric Clapton/Blind Faith

'You Shook Me' Jimmy Page/Led Zeppelin

'Midnight Rambler' Keef Richards/Rolling Stones

'Won't Get Fooled Again' Pete Townshend/The Who

'Hell On Wheels' Bob Balch/Fu Manchu

That's enough for now.

where's wally?

I'd have to say my favourite guitar player would have to be Joe Satriani, especially Surfing with the Alien.

From the early 90's was a band called Extreme, they had an excellent guitarist with a great talent for the slide.

Metallica for the whole package - bass included. Sanitarium (not sure on the spelling) and One - both great Metallica songs.

This is my ninth year of playing guitar. The best German beer is Becks! Of course, that is only if you're not drinking that stuff that comes from across the western border (Stella Artois, that is!).

Favoutire guitar song:

* Cherub Rock - Smashing Pumpkins (the riff during the verses, using the octaved chords is a classic - and the solo is also my fave).

9 other guitar songs of a noteworthy mention to make up my top 10 favourites (IMO, that is!):

* Soma - Smashing Pumpkins
* Zero - Smashing Pumpkins
* Geek USA - Smashing Pumpkins
* Paranoid Android - Radiohead
* Country Feedback - R.E.M.
* Little Wing - Jimi Hendrix
* Stairway to Heaven - Led Zepelin
* Eruption - Van Halen
* While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Beatles w. Eric Clapton

Of course there are tonnes of others that I like, and my opinion might change by tomorrow anyway!

Dutchy, it makes the cut not for the riff, but rather for the effort overall (just as some of those other songs on my list do!).

The Verve also have a couple of nice riffs courtesy of Nick McCabe.

Kid Rock probably has zero cred as a musician, but "Cowboy" is a fine piece of work and the guitar solo is one of the heaviest around, and probably doesn't get much credit because it's regarded as a rap song.
