Discussion Gwilt guilt!

James Gwilt. I am guilty of previously not giving him any respect or chance of playing a valuable part in the Saints team. I wasn't anti Gwilt at all, I just didn't expect a lot from him. He had a big game against the Eagles and his pressure & work off the ball this year has been awesome!

I looked up his stats and while not overwhelming - aren't painting a true picture of what he's actually bringing to the team. It's the 1%'s & it must be what Lyon is asking of him as he seems pretty secure. He has a number of areas where he can improve - influence on the scoreboard, etc. With the support of the coaching staff & team mates I think he'll keep improving.

Anyway, d'ya reckon Gwilt been playing above himself - or working towards fulfilling his potential?

There were moments on Sunday when he looked like he could do anything. Esp "that" scything run across HF. I like him, but still think he's vulnerable to Armo and Raph Clarke (and X Clarke until Saturday).

Also, he really needs to learn how to kick opportunists' goals.

But he's coming and I hope he makes it. Love his work.

I loved it when he brought the ball to ground and Schneider scored a goal from it. The commentators attributed it to Roo, but it was Gwilt who brought it to ground.

To me Gwilt is a bit on the slow side, both physically and mentally.
However he has good sound football skills and seems to have recently aquired some confidence to use his size, weight and strength. Good to see him break some tackles and play on. He is laying some pretty good tackles as well.
He seems to be strugling to take a mark inside 50, which is a pity because he would be a reasonable kick for goal.

BBG - if you started this thread to stooge me, I will claim entrapment.

Agree with SS - he's a good kick and sticks his tackles when he can get a hand on them, but gets beaten to the ball too much for mine.

He's got some flexibility in terms of where he can play (which I think gets him a fair bit of slack with Ross), and I guess the competition for his role (aside from Blakey who is in the 22) is Raph? Max, Woody and Seany D being out doesn't hurt his chances of selection either (along with Goose on the way back).

At the end of the day, he is part of a well performing team. Only just hanging on imo, but even if you are the 22nd best player you're still better than plenty of others.

:D I know where you stand my man.

But I have been impressed with his contribution so far this year. Granted he is part of a winning team & agreed he has areas where he needs to improve. My opinion of Gwilt was pretty low & I've really seen some good intent from this 'project player' this year.

Where he takes his career from here I guess is in his own hands, but if he goes from here:

it could be the fairytale come true! The PNG kid from Noble Park to a valuable part of the Saints team.

I dont think weve seen Gwilts best yet. He has got a real big engine, but he doesnt apply himself at every contest like C Jones, McQualter, Ray. He has such potential. If he reads this he should know, play with enthusiasm! Go in hard, like your hungry for the ball!

He is definitely a player who needs multiple consecutive games to play well at AFL level. Each week he has shown me something that indicates improvement. He can really sink the slipper into the sherrin as well.

Meh. Not convinced yet. I guess we're not doing too badly if he's the 22nd player on the team. Which he, Zac or McQualter probably is.

Best player from New Guinea in the AFL ......maybe ..... I should look it up I suppose.
Well I think it's out of Gwilt or Malicious Michael - a bit of a way to go yet.

i think he adds presence to the side, even though he's not getting it a lot, he contributes. If he can take some more marks inside 50 would be a huge bonus because he's a very accurate long kick for goal.

I think Armitage would add a lot more to the current St.kilda side. Gwilt is a good depth player, not really in the saints best starting 22. Could he get better? maybe. Is doing very considering he was a very late draft pick in the national draft.

Couldn't see Armo playing the same lead up high forward role that Gwilt plays. Gwilt has taken some strong grabs under pressure which has helped us play the corridor. No doubt Armo is the better option when the pill hits the deck, but Gwilty has been very useful.

Watched the tape of the Pies game. Thought Gwilt did some good things which don't register on the stats - albeit I haven't been at all impressed with his 3 previous games.
