SEN reporting that GWS football Manager Jason McCartney is having a good old bleat about draftee contracts being too short at only two years because, shockingly, after two years some players have a market value greater than an initial draftee contract. Who'da thunk that could ever happen?

I sympathise.

If only it were possible for Clubs to recognise early that a kid was a bit special, and having prudently set money aside to offer them a new and better contract before the old one expired.

That way they wouldn't have to pump all their money into lifetime contracts on big coin for over rated "stars" who have so far distinguished themselves primarily by their failure to get the job done.

MANAGE YOUR * ING CAP LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE HAS TO, YOU PLASTIC campaignerS.

Cameron, Smith, Shiel, Perryman, Patton, Williams, McCartney, Adams, Treloar... the two year draftee contract had nothing to do with them leaving.

Its a pretty depressing thought for any recruit to spend a few years at the NEAFL, because everyone in front of you is on a Gillion Dollar 7 year deal.
So you waste years of your life and have your talent fade away before your eyes and then get traded to Carlton

dont think money is the may issues, playing in front of 8000 people, half of which probably not even interested vs playing in Vic/SA/WA in front of fans that give a shiz.

I don't recall them complaining about Tom Scully's initial contract.

Ahaha
How’s Tomlinson working out?
Young Clayton will look lovely in Navy!❤👍
Been the best player they've given us.
Although when your competition is Frost, Bugg and Tyson, that's not saying much.

Carry is a range, do even if he goes to Carlton he'll still be red and blue.

This franchise is fukd, will never have any fans and will bleed money til they fold it or 'merge' with somewhere else
It's why it should always have been a relocation rather than a start up club.
Very poor business decision by very poor business managers at the AFL, one (along with the GC decision) that has cost in excess of $250 million that didn't have to be spent!
Mind you, there are other clubs that suck almost as much out of the AFL coffers.
