First of all - I'm a vego so it's all just as dead to me.

But to those of you who have eaten both Halal and non-Halal meat - does the different preparation have a noticable effect on how the meat tastes? Or is it just the same, and all the Today Tonight screaming about "Halal meat: how you could be eating it and not even being told" is just good ol' fashioned scare-mongering?

It's the same meat.
To make it halal, someone has to say a certain speech before chopping the meat.

with Halal meat the animal is slaughtered while conscious, it has it's throat cut and dies from blood loss. In Western culture most animals are "stunned" with a boltgun to the head, so they are unconscious when they have their throat cut.

Several Mcdonalds in Sydney are 'Halal'.

Slaughtering by Halal is the fastest method of killing an animal.

It is quick and pain free.

Better than shooting animals with stun-guns..causing vessels to rupture, spilling blood into the body and allowing bacteria to grow.

They also make the animal face west (as they do when they pray themselves)when they cut the head off initially.

Sorry if that sounded graphic, thats just the way they do it.

I have eaten 'normal' and halal meat. There is not much different. Some butchers will put spices in some of the meats.

It depends on the butchers I guess.

So to answer your question, the only difference is the way it is cut/killed and the fact it is holy meat to Muslims

That religion needs to get out of the stone age for it's own good.

I was taught that most slaughtermen in Australia are actually certified to slaughter in the halal way. Although electric stunning or the use of a captive bolt gun are still used.

Halal: drained of blood and blessed whilst cow is facing Mecca or something.

Kosher: drained of blood.

I've been in close proximity to a number of halal butchers and often they stink. Really really badly. Don't know if that's to do with halal or the lack of hygiene methods by those particular butchers.

I once parked in Haldon St Lakemba and as I got out of my car I was overwhelmed byu the stench of a butchery. I assumed I parked out the front of a butcher. Nope. Across the road and 3 shops down. It was just gross. Similar thing happned years before in Williams St North Perth.

Considering Islam was invented thousands of years ago then it's expected that most of its ideas are old fashioned. In fact, pretty much all major religions are old, e.g. Buddhism, Christianity, etc. In fact, I think Islam splitted from Christianity and so Christianity is older than Islam. Islam and Christianity are the same religions with the crucial difference that Christians believe Jesus Christ is God whereas Muslims believe Jesus is a man. The bible and other texts inspired by Jesus therefore is corrupted by man acting as God according to Islam. Muslims believe the Koran is inspired by God directly and not corrupted through Jesus.

One very modern religion is Scientology. It's one of the fasting growing religions in the world today.

Well there you go, you learn something new everyday. I've wondered now and then what Halal meant with the butchers down the road from my old place advertising themselves as 'halal butchers'. Now I know, feel a bit queasy, but I know now what it means.

Slightly off topic, but I found it amusing.

Somehow it came up in conversation at work that one of the local KFC outlets (Fawkner, I think) doesn't serve any of the bacon products.

This caused one workmate (who thinks he is smarter than Stephen Hawking, but is in fact about as sharp as a medicine ball) to exclaim that the local McDonalds (East Brunswick) doesn't serve any bacon product either because it's owned by a Muslim.

I said to him "I bought 4 bacon & egg muffins there this morning".

Reply : "Well then they don't hire Muslims on the morning shift"

I said : "The girl at the checkout was wearing head-dress"

Reply : "Oh that's right.. now I remember... they only use halal bacon"

Whenever I walk past any butchers, I hold my breath, the stench of blood is disgusting, same as fish shops. I can't understand how people can eat that food, when those places smell so bad. :thumbsd:

Normal butchers make me gag, halal ones generally seem to be worse.

Once when I had a real job in an office in the city, Gerald the arrogant Frenchman opened up his lunchbox containing halal meat and knocked everyone the **** out. Those who didn't evacuate promptl;y were gagging on the floor.

Yeah, but christianity no longer worries about meat, apart from good friday, there used to be a rule that no meat would be eaten on fridays. At least christiantity has evolved somewhat, Women used to be subservient under christianity, not so the case these days.

The whole idea that people will somehow be tainted if they eat 'unholy' meat is crazy.

i cant believe you still remember that place. my uncle owned the joint and this was way back in the late 80's early 90's and i have to agree with you bunsen it was the worst butcher smell i can remember. thankfully my uncle told the halal butcher he wants to sell the building and the butchers then moved to langford.

as for halal butchers there are some very negligent butchers out there but they usually get caught and closed down. there are some decent halal butchers in the northern suburbs of perth which barely have a stench and in sydney theres one in punchbowl which i remember being way better than any other halal butcher ive entered.

smells tend to last in the memory for a long time and often trigger memories.

I remember once I went down on this girl and that night I went out to dinner with friends. Whilst at the dinner table in the restaurant I could smell this girl's minge. It was real strong. I was sitting there thinking "I hope I'm the only person who can smell this". I had to ask my mate for reassurance - he assured me he couldn't smell it.

I also will no longer eat Thai food. There's a Thai restaurant in Roseberry in Sydney. One morning I was close by and I could smell this God awful smell. It nearly knocked me out. It was the Thai restaurant preparing dishes for later on. Haven't eaten Thai since. I do still eat minge though.

rofl rofl. ive also had my experiences of "girls minges" once at uni was walking down a pathway in open air and a girl with her mates walked passed me. the smell of "ill" minge nearly made me faint. I looked at her mates and it seemed they were fine with it or they had bad nose cells.

i think we should open a thread and talk about good and bad smells. another experience ive had which i think youve felt it was walking through bankstowns china town. the smell of awful delicacies as well as highly poor hygiene and to top it off alledged drug factories made me throw out my oporto lunch. i have to say that was the worst smell ive ever been across tied with the dirty minge.
