Hampson looked alright in the forwardline against geelong on saturday night, is it possible that he could occupy a forward position come the home and away season perhaps even CHF? the piece of play that had my jaw dropping was the pace he showed when chasing an opponent down. he may also provide us with another tall option that we could utilize if the opposition is being overly Fev conscious, especially in a long pass situation. is this plausible or will we just play him as back up in the ruck or develop him at the Ants for most of 2009?

I thought he was a former soccer player??

Heard he was in the top 3 at the club in the 20 meter sprint. A handy attribute for a forward.

Warnok and jacobs in the ruck, kruzer roaming mid ;), cloke and hamma arcoss half foward...

If he can manage to hold on to the ball during marking he will be a fantastic player for us. Let's hope he won't become a De Luca.

I saw a lot to suggest this. He gets in the right spot, seemed to have his opponent beaten cold many times. He moves extreamly well with speed and agility and he's a monster in terms of size and strength but he has some problems.

When he jumps he loses some balance as his posision of his legs aren't good. Jumps off both legs instead of off one and raising the other for balance. His hands also need work. Needs to spread his fingers out more and get more of his thumbs behind the ball and less of his palms. If he gets his hands right there wouldn't be many players in the competition that could stop him.

It would be good to see him play full forward in the 2nds and get some practice at this.

But he's not ready just yet.

Yes, yes he was.

Hampson looks as though he could be an amazing asset, particularly in the forward half.
Thing that worries me, is that most of us who are into our footy learnt to catch the damn thing between the ages of 5 to about 12 years old. I've always noticed that the kids who never really learnt to mark properly when they were youngsters, always struggled for the rest of their careers.
Hoping like hell that big Hammer can prove me wrong.

PS: I do like how he has the mental ability to use his opponents feet to kick goals for him {Hawks game}. That's a skill that can't be taught.

Totally agree with this.

If Hammer can work on and fix these things I have no doubt he could be a ripper CHF for us :thumbsu:

His attributes for a forward, let alone a ruckman, are plain scary should he get it all together. :)

Hampson is a rare talent with an even more rare combination of physical and athletic attributes and could well be anything. Towards the end of last year however, Ratten said that he is as many as four years away from having an impact in the ruck at AFL level (hence our chasing Warnock so hard).

At this stage what he needs most game time and experience and as such he should play for the Ants to maximise his game time, confidence and development. Rushing him into the AFL with limited game time and in a more limiting position is not the way to go IMO.

As for down the track, we still have a lot to learn about his ability in this code before we will know where to best capitalise on his strengths.

Jedis are not born with the ability to perform the Jedi mind trick, they are taught

No - Cloke to hold the position until around round 10 and Kruezer to then hold down CHF.
Cloke will be on the outer by years end as players just run off him too easily. Kruezer can compete on the deck

Well, oilbeefhooked. It's actually a learnt skill. Amazing.

Yes. 50:50 gametime with Cloke at CHF and see what happens. Hampson did very well against Scarlett - the best FB in the AFL. Excellent in the one-on-ones, good at ground level, and effected some nice taps in the forward line. Impressed with his performance, and has way more upside than Cloke. Obviously learning still, but so are about 70% of our young list. Why not make him into an oversize KP forward who can ruck. He has the speed, agility and endurance to play CHF. :)

Agree with most that Hampson is a "work in progress", but one that is worth the effort. What I can't believe is some people think that Jacobs looked good in the ruck. He is a honest grunt at best. Looked slow and hopeless at ground level. I know thats not his job but Kruezer looks great mopping things up off the deck. Even Hampson looks the athlete despite his lack of footy smarts.

I still think that the ruck position is going to be a problem this year again unless Warnock can be used heavily. Unfortunately he has missed too much fitness work pre-season and will struggle to catch up. That means we will have to rotate Kruezer, Cloke and Jacobs. Thats too many talls in my book.

As for Hampson at CHF I doubt he could add any real value this year in that position.

Better to play Hampson as a ruckman either at AFL level - off the bench -or back in the Ants.
