HIS first 22 months at Punt Rd have been heavy going, and the Tigers coach admits there's plenty of work to be done on the long road ahead.

THE message from AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou to the entire Richmond Football Club at a recent meeting at Punt Rd was blunt.

Unless you are able to get out of the bottom bracket in the AFL's football expenditure "arms race", you will struggle to win that long-awaited 11th flag.

It's something that Richmond coach Damien Hardwick knew was an issue that was slowly being addressed internally, but it is never nice to hear the cold, hard facts as delivered by the AFL boss.

Not too much new, at this point of the season there's really nothing left to be said but regurgitation. What I would love to know however is who the hell is the bloke in the picture?

Is it Dean Putt?God I don't know either and it's eating away at me.

He made no apologies for telling Shane Tuck and Brad Miller at the start of the season that if a younger player better suited to their roles were ready to go, the younger player would most likely be picked.

Good to see.

Um... that's Lurch isn't it?

I'm not sure what he means when he says on the one hand he wants to win but on the other hand it is more important to play young guys for the sake of playing them. It's dangerous I think.

Not having winning as #1 priority does nothing to promote a healthy culture and we have discussed the need for a great club culture to build..... These guys need to learn how to win and there aint many guys in the team who know how.

Also it does not encourage young blokes to give their all and fight every week cos they know they are going to play next week regardless. I don't like it.

Having said that I can swallow many of the selection decisions made this year, but there are several that I don't understand and do not agree with. (Post, Tuck the main ones)

This quote is a little concerning:

Hardwick said: "Regardless of whether I am here at the end, I want to make sure that we get the start right.

"The funny thing is when you start something, you have got to begin with the end in mind
.

Hope a seed of doubt is not creeping in to his longevity as coach; as this can quickly permeate through a club and more importantly through a playing group.

Didn't Wallace make winning his #1 priority bringing in Knobel, Mark Graham, Kent Kingsley and Cousins? Look where he ended up by cutting corners trying to make winning a priority ahead of playing young guys.

Thats still not going to stop the pro Tuck brigade from suggesting that Hardwick has no idea what he is doing by not playing him.

i wouldnt dare suggest hardwick has no idea what he is doing but im more than happy to suggest he gets the odd thing wrong.
in not playing tuck he got it wrong. no big deal we all make mistakes learn from them and move on.

the toughest decision hardwick and cameron have to make this off season is weather they let jackson go or not. i have no doubt what so ever he should go in fact should have gone 4 seasons ago.

Geez how poor are we that we are one of the few teams who cannot afford to have the entire team with GPS units. I'm sure Collingwood not only has one for each player in the seniors but probably at VFL level too. We have a long way to go.

If we judge him on the Tuck decision. which we dont, then yes he has no idea..

He simply should come out and admit he made a mistake.

How can his decision to try and develop kids, when rebuilding a list, ahead of older players be classified as a mistake? The only way it can be is when supporters want short term results over long term success.

It is only natural for a coach to want more power over the changes he can make in real time throughout a season like a mid year trade.

It means a coach has more opportunity to develop a list without bottoming out as much by pinch hitting positional changes mid year for short term glory to save they butts at the expense of long term club success.

The truth is coaches that can only make changes end of year have to better as there is an art to predicting what a team will do in 12 months time . It requires a buy in of the players loyalty and belief.

I cannot see this happening like in basketball which promotes their junk status!!

It would mean no-one talks about your team winning a premiership until half way through the season as you don't know what your team will be. What happens if WC wants Hall after knocking out Staker for example later in the season.

Not only that there would be no revenue in betting agencies for futures which means less revenue for AFL.

So general less interest in AFL early out in the season would be counter productive to promoting the code IMO and the on-field player level field marathon aspect would be eliminated as commercial trading takes over by the opportunist corporate raiders !!!!

how can not playing a big bodied experienced player which we have few of,a player who plays in a position we regularly got smashed in not be a mistake.

yes playing kids over older players is part of the process but clearly hardwick played kids over the wrong experienced player.

we either lack experience and enough big bodies and inside ball winners or we dont. hardwick cant have it both ways.

im all for playing as many kids as is practicable but even i have acknowledged we need to find more mature players as we still play too many kids who are not ready and/or undersized.

what i dont get is why the defenders of hardwick with his decisioin not to play tuck are not into him for playing miller.
the only possible conclusion i can come to for the double standards is people will defend hardwick and the club no matter what, right or wrong.

I often wonder the same thing when it comes to double standards. When Miller was playing regular games early on posters were up in arms asking what good does it do to play him when we could be playing someone like Post instead. Then when Griffiths came back the same things happened until Miller finally went out for Griffiths to come in. Yet when it comes to Tuck the constant call is that younger players should dropped so that Tuck can play and for what, so we lose by 4 goals rather than 7. Thats not planning for the future, thats worrying about the present and putting short term wins ahead of long term success.

Given the choice between the 2 I know what I would rather we focused on and its not winning an extra 2-3 games this year.

oh dear do i detect a twist in the knickers.
