too much hype,
hopefully, it will die like the Pokemon craze eventully did.
The fact that it is a 2 and a half hour movie, has destroyed and slim chance I had of seeing it.

I have to read the book for school (honest!) and I think it is a bit overrated though it isn't bad. I'm thinking about seeign the movie, it might help with the evalutaing and so forth.

I just hope it isnt too kids orientated. If its fun for the whole family, it should rock. But im waiting for Episode 2 and LOTR FOTR.

overated? gezz thats harsh, harry potter is good because it combines adventure and magic.

Well...
I don't know too much about Harry Potter, but the movie does have a "Tim Burton feel" with that music. However, there is too much hype about it, and it is targetted towards children/young teenagers. I'm a little too old for these sort of movies, but I'll make an exception and see the movie (too see what the hype is all about). Then after I have seen it... I will come to a conclusion
If it's good... then that's money well spent! But if it's bad... then that's a waste of my money and I want two and a half hours of my life back, Harry!

And how many of the books have you read Ryan, to know that they are childrens books? The books, when writen, were never intended for children. But, they tell in a classical format a fairy tale, that overall is a good story. Guess what, children just happen to love good natured fairy tales. That doesn't mean they are for children.
I would highly suggest you actually know the contect you remark on, then maybe you could form a valid opinion. If I am wrong however, and you have read the books, then why don't you put up some facts about it and why it is a kiddie book?
And Millhouse, care to state some reasons it is boring and repetitive? I know I'm asking a lot when I ask people to backup thier statements with thought, rationality, and reason, but maybe I'm just picky.
I found the books to be very good books. And rather than just saying that, I'll say WHY, which is what matters. The author weaves quite a fantasy world in the books. Very nice descriptions, and very nice details bring the characters and the environment to life. The good characters are likable, and the villians are just as they should be, evil, but not to the point where things get too violent, or too over the top. There is a good balance of humor to lighten up the mood and drama to keep you rivited. I know stating all these facts might not be as convincing as a one-liner about "it sucks!/its good!" but, meh, whaddya gonna do?
