...
The Daily Telegraph reports that O'Brien's reaction - an anaphylactic shock that can be life-threatening - happened after he fractured his finger at training.

O'Brien said he could see "bone and fat" protruding from his finger after a marking incident.
...
"It was [frightening]. I could feel myself getting worse and worse. My chest felt like it was just caving in. I was in a bit of trouble [Wednesday] but feeling good [now and] I am fine [to play]."

"Bone and Fat" protruding from finger? "Life threatning" anaphylactic shock? "Fine to play"? I don't think so! :(

Anaphalaxis would suck, but I'm more concerned about that nasty-sounding finger fracture! If a fractured finger can ruin ponting...

coming from someone who fractured 4 or so fingers over 18 months (had a really massive growth spurt) fractured fingers (especially thumbs!!) are a bitch to play, however you can still play with them, just means the healing process will take longer due to extra knocks and stuff like marking will be affected. doesnt seem worth it to play him, get him right. Perhaps Rounds to debut, he was named as first emergency!

He would've been perfectly fine within twelve hours, just needs to stay away from that type of antibiotics

The compound fracture on his finger now that is an issue

The anaphylaxis is overcome pretty quickly (although very serious at the time). It's the finger fracture that is the issue.

I suppose it depends on what finger and where it is fratured!

Where's Swooop when you need him? ;)

Must be something that can be put back into place, stitch up and OK to go with a little injection. The tendon injuries seem to be the ones that keep players out for some weeks.

I wasn't aware you could have an allergic reaction from breaking a bone, seems odd.

I wonder what is the AFL's stance on using adrenaline:eek::p

The antibiotics caused the reaction, which is relatively common

What is odd is he only found out now in his 20s

Not sure if that was tongue in cheek but he had a recation to the antibiotics he took after injuring his finger. Kind of funny I just completed a first aid course and we looked into all this sort of thing. As for the actual adrenaline shot they do it to the thigh.

As others have said, the anaphylactic reaction is now the least of Harry's worries.

I can say that now that he's survived it, cos you don't always!!

That's what the kids who die of peanut allergy etc get. Like everything there's grades mild, moderate and severe, but yeah, adrenaline can be life saving for sure.

The compound fracture is a far greater concern. That may take six eweeks to fully heal.

But it is one of these fractures that could potentially be treated differently for a footballer in that you could possibly play with it all taped up and injected with local..which def isn't ideal and it could take way longer if they go that way.

He may well miss a few, will be interested to see how they manage it.

Lucky we're getting a few back lately.

Anaphylaxis can be life threatening, although it seems it's more due to the finger issue. Unfortunately I'm one of the fortunate few who suffer from mild-severe anaphylaxis (exercise-induced) during intensive distance cardio.

That shit ain't good!

At least it's not something that's recurring from what I'm reading, so he should be fine. It in itself, now that it has passed isn't that bad, so hopefully nothing else to worry about aside from the finger issue. Can't believe a marking contest would result in a compound fracture, but .. Jebus!
