I can relate to that.

They have created a whole vocabulary of their own which I find is overly complex. Yet there seems to be a lot of value placed in risk assessment.

sigh..........I dont even know what risk assesment is doing as part of an occupational health and safety diploma. The two things are completely different, and dont really seem to complement each other at all.

The OH&S component is a twaddle compared to risk assessment.

I would say that risk assessment at a corporate level has lost some of its lustre. I remember about 3 years ago, almost everything was analysed in a risk context. Doesn't seem to be the case anymore. OH & S seems to be the exception though - which makes sense as the legislation is written in a risk-context.

Thats interesting to hear POBT, I might bring that up in my next lecture.

Just as a matter of interest, what industry are you working in? I dont need/want the name of the company or anything, just interested to put a context to your comments in light of your particular industry.

I actually work in the government, in a legal role. However, I quite often act in management roles as well (I am a bit of a floating 2IC), which is where I've had exposure to corporate risk management.

Take a look at this website - http://education.qld.gov.au/riskmanagement/what.html

Most government departments don't publish a lot of their risk documents but Education does have quite a lot of stuff online.

IMO, government risk management is the same as in the corporate world except that,in a government context, everything should be (ultimately) measured against service delivery whereas the corporate world obviously focuses on profits.

and minimising losses.

Thanks POBT.

I just finished writing my first paper entitled: Nanotechnology, an Emerging Risk.

Just a tip everyone, be careful using sunscreen until further notice. You might potentially see some big name corporate players in some deep shit in a few years time because of jumping the gun on nanotech produced materials.
