Have a Red Instead?

In the spirit of looking back and comparing players/things, I thought I would throw this question out there. Hopefully it makes more sense than my Judd vs. Kouta thread did

We know that Brendan Fevola is 3rd on Carlton's all-time list of goalkickers with 575 goals in the Navy Blue. Slightly lower on the list is Lance "Big Red" Whitnall, who bagged 348 goals for his Carlton career.


My question to you has a couple of parts. If Whitnall had been healthy throughout his entire career, and had been used permenantly as a forward instead of being thrown down back, who do you think would have eventually been the better goal-scorer? Also, who do you think would have proven to be the best OVERALL forward? That includes offensive AND defensive skills/efforts, as well as teamwork, footy IQ and so on.

Which made it even worse when he became a traitor dog.

Hamill was a perfect example of running in a straight line at the ball no matter what was coming towards you.

When he was at the Saints I saw him lay a hit on Akermanis that I'll never forget, dislocated his shoulder I think.

I am mad that he left the club... but I am even more angry with the club for letting him go.

Unless he writes an autobiography, and the facts of his departure are proven, we will never know the whole story.

I know what you're saying. Looking at the past and comparing players and so on isn't going to change anything, but basically, the season is over, the drafts are over, trade week is over, and we're still 3 months away from having more footy to talk about. I'm basically just trying to come up with some different ideas to keep the Carlton-related discussion flowing until we get something current to talk about.

I was the same. I used to love Big Red. I think I liked the way that someone so slow, fat and unathletic could play such great footy. Very similar to why I used to love watching Larry Bird and the Celtics play basketball.

However, I was also a massive Fev fan. He was my favourite player until we traded him.

All things being equal, Fev would have still kicked more goals and was the better full forward. Lance just didn't have the leg speed to get to enough balls, didn't have the agility to get the ground balls Fev got, and didn't get off the ground much (mind you Fev was not high flyer either). Lance relied on reading the play and protecting the drop of the ball. He had a couple of great days out but was limited as a career full forward.
