Hawke slams Govt's education credentials
The former prime minister Bob Hawke has criticised the Howard Government for failing to invest in education, saying that is the sole reason for the current skills shortage.
Speaking at a charity race day at Sydney's Randwick racecourse, Mr Hawke says Australia lags behind other OECD countries in public funding for skills training.
He says it is not industrial relations, but a lack of education funding that is standing in the way of economic growth.
And he says the Opposition leader Kevin Rudd understands that.
"Despite all the other crimes of this government and the shortcomings of this government, the one area that sticks in my mind as being totally unacceptable is the area of education and I must say Kevin, we're all thrilled that you have committed yourself to a revolution in education," Mr Hawke said.
He says the Labor Party favours equal opportunity for all Australians irrespective of their background.
"And that principle has been increasingly diminished almost to the point of disappearance under the 10 years of the most conservative government in the history of this country and it certainly as it was in 1972, it's time for a change," he said.
