Your review and thoughts here please.

Renouf after a stirling performance was almost motionless in the last quarter he was so tired. Maybe there is a ruckman from BHH we can throw into the deep end as we simply cannot go with one only.

Despite some good work early in the game and working hard our defence remains brittle. The Cats forwards hold contested and uncontested marks more consistently than ours.

Full marks to Mitch leading a battling midfield.

Hooper was a huge loss as we could have done with his nip going forward. Cyril brilliant early but lack of pre-season preparation told as the game came to the crossroads.

Umpiring was very good today.

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

Man, you guys need to fix those clangers down back...there were at least 3-4 goals given up down there as a result of poor kick-ins or poor handling/decision-making....and in a tight game, that's gonna kill ya!

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

Only saw the 2nd half. Looked way off the mark in terms of fitness. Bad disposal, same old stuff etc etc.....should have won of course. Were the players carrying lead weights in their boots in the last half.

Hit outs 46/22 in favour of the cats, free kicks 27/17 also in favour of the cats, not good!

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

We need to field two ruckman, regardless of experience. Midfielders doing the ruck will not help. Renouf was too tired in that 4th quarter and we couldn't get a clearance. Play Grimley if necessary, we will be crucified by the Bulldogs if we try the same thing next week.

That said, Geelong were lucky in the third and fourth quarters with some convenient umpiring. First goal free kick was not there. The second goal stemming from the free kick in the middle, way to make that one up, then there was a goal that came about after a geelong player gathered the ball and tried to break two tackles, dropped the ball into the hands of a team mate, and the goal was allowed. Annoying because in the fourth Franklin gets tackled and the ball knocked loose in the tackle and instead of calling play on Franklin was pinned for dropping the ball. More convenient umpiring. Besides that, the umpiring was pretty good.

Very sad for Geelong, and something worthy noting for Hawthorn is that despite all their gifts, Geelong could still only manage a 9 point victory. Not to say they still wouldn't have won, but I'd like to see them win a game without assistance and knowing winks from the umpires. Again it's not always about what is paid, but what is NOT paid. Geelong often conveniently benefit and that's why I loathe more than any other team.

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

The one ruckman is just not working for me.

Renouf will end up getting injured. Got to pick someone else to play there, not have guys come from other spots on the ground, 'robbing Peter to play Paul'.

Yeah, true. Our game plan only works with a full compliment of A grade players. Guys like Schoenmakers still let us down with poor disposal when it's tight. The players don't talk to each other - see Bateman caught with the ball.

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

Would have luved the win and we could have done it but not to be. Certainly not disgraced against a virtually full strength cats. I thought the umpiring was crap but that’s not what cost the game.

Remember.....Sewell, Burgoyne, Young, Taylor/Bailey. We're doin okay.

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

I thought our effort today was fantastic.

A lack of composure at times cost us easy goals and was probably the difference in the end.

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

Same stuff different year. We start well, but then fall away in the second half, compounded by having only one Ruckman which effectively kills contests. Against sides like Geelong, were going to get run over like a Kangaroo caught in the headlights. Unless we can seriously address this issue, were going to have a shocking start to the year.

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

Have to agree, some very poor decision making in the backline really hurt. Murphy is very suspect under any form of pressure (perceived or actual). Saying that, Geelong have very good players in there forward line and we were beaten by better team. Renouf worked hard and was out on his feet late which inturn meant we were killed in clearances in the last quarter.

Let's see how we go next week after a short break.

The game in round 4 versus the Pies will be huge and a must win.

Geez. Reading this you'd think we lost by 9 goals, not 9 points.

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

Did anyone think the umps were terrible in the 2nd half today. They cost us big time. That free for a push in the back against schoey on byrnes was the biggest load of shit i have ever seen. It happens 10 times every game and to pay it at that stage of the game was unforgivable.

Other than that the biggest worry for us is the lack of a second ruck against the good sides. The exposed us massively in the 2nd half (no fault of Renouf's) and that is where the difference in the teams came from. Other than that I thought we were pretty evenly matched.

More game time into Buddy, Rioli, Bateman, plus the addition of Young, Burgoyne and Sewell and we are going to be bloody hard to beat. High hopes for the rest of 2010 but really disappointed we didn't win today, we were definately in a position to take it awa
y from the cattery.

On a side note, how good was it to see Gablett get caughtg twice for holding the ball today. cop that you bald prick!

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

An entertaining game of footy. The match was an example of how footy should be played.

Hawthorn should've won of course lol. But their inexperienced backline, the lack of a 2nd ruckman and getting smashed in the clearances in the 2nd half was the difference.

Mate, were talking last years premiers here so we didn't go to bad. Sure I'm dissapointed like I am with every loss but it looked like a completely different team running around out there compared to last year so we can take alot out of that loss. We may very well lose again next week aswell but we shouldn't be hanging ourselves just yet!:thumbsu:

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

CAnnot believe there have been no mentions of Campbell Brown yet. Absolutely atrocious today. He may haev been a distraction for Scarlett but that did not work out too well. Needs a good kick up the arse, like our team.

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

Frustrating game...choke off really......neither team really wanted to win it; add umpiers giving them a free ride = Geelong fell over the line.

That being said Franklin played like a million air, only lead once or twice the whole game; Mitchell was brilliant until Ling killed him, we need another ruckman, our backline was once again killed by a power forward (A sh*t second rate one at that) Everyone one else played ok but our turnovers absolutely killed us, we can't beat a zone.

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

at the end of the day, we should have won and deserved to win. we had our chances and we only kicked 4 goals in the second half. that wont do it for us.

very proud and happy with the boys effort today - we really shook geelong and i think the cats know we will beat them soon enough.

but we are back. no doubt about that. great effort from renouf - think the move in bringing rough into the ruck in the last quarter came a bit too late.

sewell coming back in a few weeks will help the clearance work.

umps were fairly good today. there is no rule that the free kick count has to be even. if anything, maybe more consistency.

overall: great effort just dropped off in the last 5 minutes of each quarter and the cats got a lot of their goals in red time.

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

Good, tough, hard game of footy. Was a joy to watch.

Highlighted a few areas of weakness (esp. the ruck) but also showed a lot of good positive signs.

There were several times I was thinking "this team is playing like the '08 team did".

Re: Hawks v Cats Match Review ...

don't be too hard on players today, very proud of the way that they put bodies on the line. Renouf should be applauded for his effort today. Just a thought would you consider buddy going into ruck only for around the ground play, (not centre square tap outs) to bring him into game more. Will be a big improvement when sewell and burger are fit and firing and with the defensive pressure of brown, cyril and peterson in our forward line i can see massive improvments this year.
