It seemed to me that the Hawthorn players, when standing the mark in our defence, would creep around sidewards to prevent the "switch" kick. Probably under instruction?

One more than one occasion I thought they did this illegally, not really following the "arc" around, and coming way too close to our player with the ball. Umpires seemed to be oblivious to it. On a day of sheer frustration, this practice tipped me over the edge into a rage (much to the embarrassment of my son).

Anyone else notice this?

They are allowed to and they're bloody smart at it. :thumbsu:

On the mark they have to stay there but they can wander around the side and then rule is they only have to be 5 metres away instead of the mark set according to the rules. The trick is, like a few figured yesterday is to wait until they come too far around and then just play on, unfortunately ours skills screwed that up yesterday.

Its an annoyingly smart move by Hawthorn, have to give them kudos for it unfortunately.

yep they definately did it when we took possession in the back half... a great tactic to slow the attack down and discourage the run and carry that worked in the 1st quarter. Many of our kicks from defence were forced wider, higher or crappier than they should have been.

Watching the replay will show you that the umpires were not oblivious to it... they would be constantly saying to the hawks players 'back a metre (or 2)' but then refused to call 50 (and slow down the game) when they didn't.
There are 2 considerations to this:

1. The umpires considered the richmond player in possession had played on before a resonable amount of time had been given for the man on the mark to move back although he was attempting to (happened about 3 times).
2. The player on the mark never got back to the correct position, the richmond player tried to move the ball quickly by playing on... the umpire calls play on and the Hawthrorn player that has never gone back to the correct position runs further forward to apply pressure. (occured in the majority)

The first consideration could be considered one of the vagueries of football. The second should be considered 50 metres every time - but unfortunately i think the umpires are scared to and will limit decisions to the odd one here and there. A good example of how the rule should be enforced is is rugby league where with a quick play of the ball and dummy half run, if the players who made the tackle (and are essentially on the mark of the stoppage) do not get back 'square' to the stoppage are penalised.

At the end of the day its great professionalism by Hawthorn.

If Wallace had studied the tape of our games this year, he would have noticed that we have done this every game (including NAB Cup). The teams we have lost against have exploited it well. Adelaide gave us an absolute hiding because they were prepared, same with Sydney and the Dogs.

I can't believe Wallace actually didn't tell his men to run through the mark and get some yardage and kick it up the guts. You did it in the first quarter. Amazing strategist is Terry.

Maybe he did tell them but they did not do it - ever thought of that ?

its one thing to tell the players to do it and another for the players to be switched on at all times

hawks discipline :thumbsu:

wallace is a just one trick pony, he got no backup plan to counter any moves that the other coach made all year, and that why the tigers only won once this year, after being within striking distance in a lot of matches. blaming poor disposal is just a coverup for poor coaching. every team has turnovers but wallace keeps to the same structure when the other teams adjust instead of making switches.

We have done it all year, against Brisbane we actually played one on the original mark and one preventing the switch which obviously back fired. It forces teams wide and down the wings which really worked in the 2nd half against you guys.

Some times we infringe but trust me we have been called for a lot of 50's for the same sort of infringement this season, you just had a stiff day with the umps
