hd cables for xbox 360

Use the other 3 cables and put them in their respective slots (match colour for colour) at the back, i think you still need to use the red and white cables for the audio to come through. I've never actually done it myself though as i don't want to stuff up my parents HDTV (ghosting from having the same image on the screen for ages)

The red yellow and white cables are not able to give a HD picture, so if you're using those forget it. Even if you have a picture it won't be HD. You must use the composite (red green blue in colour...i think) video cables, or a HDMI cable on xbox's that have one, to get a HD signal

Then make sure the cable plug at the xbox end is switched to HD, and then go to the system blade on the desktop to change to HD. You have a choice of 720P, 1080I, or 1080P depending on your TV.

Component is the word you are looking for Mancey.

But yeah, for HD resolutions you have to use Component, HDMI or VGA, the yellow composite cable can't carry an HD signal.

whoops, yeah sorry...brain fade.

Wait, do some models of 360 not even have HD output as standard? HAHA glad I bought the elite.

I think the standard arcade console only comes with non HD capable cables, tho you can buy the HD cable as an optional extra.

The premium, or pro, which most people have, has both component for HD gaming, and composite for normal non HD TV's.

Just MS maintaining their policy of giving the buyer the option. Not everyone wants, or can use HD cables.

You certainly don't need to buy an elite for HD gaming

Sorry, you've mistaken this as an opportunity to troll the 360 again...move along now

You are right, he is trolling but the round about point he is making has merit....360 is billed as a next gen console so if you were to buy one (as the OP did) you could be forgiven for thinking you were getting a HD picture straight out of the box. With that said I reckon the ps3 ships without a component cable so I guess its guilty as charged as well.

I remember buying my first digital amp around 2000 and being gutted when I realised I needed an optical cable for dolby/dts surround. Got it home hooked it up and then realised what I was missing. Would have been nice if it was included with the amp or better yet if the sales rep had known the product and suggested I buy one!

You're confusing HDMI with HD.

What he said. The standard xbox pro console comes with HD component cables as bought. Its still HD. The elite is the only xbox360 with HDMI, but you do not need HDMI cables for HD gaming, component cables still give a 1080P output.

But by the sounds of it, the OP does have the HD cables, he's just hooked it up wrong. The Pro console, the standard xbox360 console which the majority of people buy, comes standard with a multi-use cable. One set of RCA's on the cable gives HD through component, the other, SD through composite.

Only the extremely basic arcade/core console, which also comes with no HDD, wireless etc comes with no HD cable. But its also extremely cheap to buy as a result. If you want HD at a later date, all you have to do is buy the cable.

I think you mean "their policy of deceiving the buyer into having to purchase multiple add-ons that should come standard after an initial cheap purchase price"

It's like buying a car, then being the option as to whether you want a steering wheel and four tyres.

Get out of troll mode Karl, its getting absolutely ridiculous. Whereas you need a steering wheel and tyres to drive a car. HD capability is very much a non required feature that many people have no need for.

Even dumber, as has been repeated many times, the standard xbox package includes HD cables as standard. The arcade 360 that doesn't is very much for the budget conscious gamer, who i doubt will even possess a HDTV.

True, after re-reading it that seems to be the case...looks as if he had the composite leads plugged in instead of the component.

I have both consoles so don't have a bias from one to the other but if I watch dvd's it is always the ps3 due to upscaling. If I play online it is with the ps3 because its free.

The 360 has some decent exclusive titles but then so does the ps3. Its horses for courses but if you are looking to buy a next gen console AND want to use it for multimedia/next gen movies, dvd player etc the ps3 is hard to beat in my opinion.

If you are solely interested in gaming and don't care for any of the previously mentioned benefits a 360 is still a bloody good gaming console with a fair bit to offer. I still fire up gotham 4 and love it.

Sort your problem out Richo?

Did you find the display setting option on the systems blade?

yeh it seems as though i had it on the wrong channel:o

Did you just get the system Richo?

Nothing better than a new console, ready to be broken in. :D

And to get HDMI you need the Elite, correct?

The 360n is for white trash and poor people. Microsoft's bread and butter.

Actually no. The XBox360 Pro console now comes with a HDMI slot. I know as I have one connected by HDMI Cable. Only thing Elite has extra is a larger HDD and headset. And FWIW, PS3 only comes standard with AV cables. You need to buy component or HDMI cables extra. So with that, XBox is better off...You fanboys...:p (on both sides, that is ;))

PS. Mancey, I'm pretty sure component only gives you 1080i

From 1080P wiki

All versions of the Xbox 360 after the August 2007 dashboard update support 1080p output through VGA and component, and as well on newer models with HDMI.

Games will display in full 1080P with a component cable mate.

I don't think HD DVD video will, not because it isn't possible, but due to some sort of licensing agreement or something.

But yeah, for gaming, the component cable is 1080P compliant.

Playing mass effect in 1080p using it right now actually
