ESSENDON premiership player Chris Heffernan will announce his retirement today.

The Dons midfielder played 170 games, including seven this year, one the Round 22 clash against West Coast with his close mate James Hird.

Drafted from the Geelong Falcons in 1997, Heffernan played 123 games for the Bombers and 47 for Melbourne.
I
t's understood Heffernan came to his decision after a meeting with new Dons coach Matthew Knights yesterday.

Will be an absolute gun at whatever level he now decides to play at. Still showed in the West Coast game that he is still a high class footballer. Shame things didn't turn out the way he would have liked. The Melbourne move looks like it has put a premature end on what could have been a great career.

Interesting to note how many careers went south once we held that 2000 premiership aloft...Moorcroft, Alessio, Blumfield, Mercuri to name 5 including Heffernan.

Sheedy has said many times, and before 2000, that some players only have one flag in them. As backhanders go, that is not so bad really . . . There are may great players who never one even one!

Cant disagree with you though.
